Thanks to the already mythic thread on Russian lenses, I have found a link to the website Astronomer.ru, which provides online PDF copies of the famous A.F. Yakoviev catalog of "objectives: photographic, movie, projection, reproduction, for the magnifying apparatuses." This is a complete catalog of all the Russian lenses made until 1970 (there is also a 1971 edition), which provides for each lens a diagram showing the optical formula, a technical drawing of the lens, lens specifications including resolution figures, etc. Of course, these catalogs are in Russian, but one doesn't need to understand the language to read the technical specs and to enjoy the numerous illustrations. The catalogs feature all the lenses produced, including many special purpose lenses that are not in Princelle's book. Here's the link to the translated page from the Russian website (slow connection owners beware: those PDF files are huge):
Yakoviev's catalog of Russian lenses

Enjoy!

I agree, these are a real treasure but don't thank me, thank the author of the catalogs, the person who has scanned them and the administrator of the website who had made them available to he public.

Cheers!

Is anyone able to save these? When I try, I get a translated page and it starts to download a PDF inside the browser, but never completes it. It seem to be impossible to do a simple right-click of "save destination as".

btw thanks Abbazz for the great find, although I have not been able to see them yet.

The downloading of the files is very slow (low bandwidth). In Firefox, you can select "Save link target as..." in the right-click menu, maybe your browser has not this option.

Here's the direct link to the web page in Russian: http://www.astronomer.ru/telescope.php?action=13&gid=39

And here are direct links to the two editions of the catalog:
1970 catalog
1971 catalog

Cheers!

Here is another useful file: the 1963 complete GOI lens catalog. That's 447 pages full of illustrations with lots of lenses you have never seen anywhere else before. As the 2 other catalogs I posted on this thread, this one is in Russian. With the full approval of the original owner of this file, I have posted it on my website to allow for faster downloading. Please visit Андрей's website for some explanations about this catalog and also some very interesting pages about Almaz cameras. Here's the link to the downloading page for the catalog:

anti-spam prevents linking in number 1 message, pictures too

Downloaded, I right clicked your link and saved link as. Interesting illustrations. I can figure out the lens names but the other text is difficult. My wife's Russian (learned in Poland) is rusty and she's not technical enough to understand some of it. I'll play about with OCR and translators to see what kind of mess I can make with it!!

I accidentally came across Princelles recently while looking for free photography e-books and downloaded it. Its a high quality pdf.

Would I be allowed to link to it here? Admins??

Sorry, I was being lazy and rushed . It is as kansalliskala mentions an antispam measure, that your first post cannot contain and image or links. It was nice of you to bring back this thread back from the dead and provide new links. Welcome to the forum. Very Happy

Princelles is a huge book devoted to the 'Russian' camera history. It is used as a resource for Russian Camera historians. I have a copy in English. I can provide the download link that I found for this out-of-print book if not forbidden to do so by the moderators.

That'd be great! It's much more useful than the 2 posted before for us not-russian speakers Very Happy

I don't know about the moderators but my bad conscience won't stop me from downloading it. Could you PM me the link, please.
I promise to be ashamed of myself no end.

It's not out of print Rolling Eyes

I met Princelle some days ago at Bièvres, and also his translator and guide month ago (spent hours at his home, talking about soviet stuffs and how they made the book). It's quite a pity to steal his book whereas he did a great job, especialy in those time, when internet was not...

I agree absolutely with this. Even if it's out of print, it's Princelle's intellectual property and if he and his publishers haven't agreed to provide a freely downloadable version then it amounts to stealing from them both. Authors of such works earn precious little money in exchange for the huge amounts of time and effort that goes into them and to be the victim of such a robbery must be both infuriating and dispiriting.

Author royalties are typically between 7.5% and 10% for printed books. Those who have availed themselves of "free" downloads might consider paying the author directly . . . or at least deleting the PDFs.
