I went back to http://www.dunrobincastle.co.uk/ again today to watch the falconry display. This time I was using my Optomax 135/2.8, once again I didn't come away with many keepers because the birds are simply too fast for me to keep up with.
But I did get a few I was happy with....(all shot at 5.6 with ISO up to 2500)
This is a Saker falcon (or Desert Falcon) one of the oldest breeds used in Falconry, known to date back 4000 years.

and here are three shots of a Harris Hawk called Plum

I'm amazed I'm getting any of these in focus, especially considering my fingers were white with the cold. Crying or Very sad
Tomorrow I think I'll try my Nikon 105/4 Very Happy

I prefer those samples than those with the 24-105, bokeh is much better

I agree 100%, the fact that the 24-105 is away being repaired has turned out to be a blessing. Smile

Thanks guys Very Happy

Regarding focusing, I just focused at the furthest point and nearest point I expected to have a chance at a shot, then 'told' my fingers the range of focus ring movement. I then tried to stay within those limits. I did manage to get a lot (read some) more in focus but the exposure was beyond fixing sometimes. Flare was controlled, to a point, with a 99p petal shaped hood from ebay.
I'm looking forward to trying this again with the Nikon 105/4, on paper it should perform better than this Optomax.

Wow, incredible captures!
It is really difficult to get these animals with prefocusing because you don't really have key points to prefocus onto!

those great shots.... and I have to ask you, can you share big size?

That's right, prefocusing was impossible because I can't predict where they are going to fly, so I had to try to focus while looking through the viewfinder. Most of the time what I could see was a blur Rolling Eyes but somehow I was able to get it right occasionally.

Excellent images, lovely to look at.

I visited Dunrobin castle 40 years ago when I was a wee lad on the family holiday. I still have the guidebook somewhere!

Are you saying the lens is an M42 mount and the camera is Canon EOS?
If so there's hundreds of adapters for that on ebay, eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=M42+to+eos+adapter&_sacat=0&_from=R40
