Ooooooooooo, nice. One of the few lenses still on my want list. Size does matter Smile

Thank you ! Very Happy

I had to make some adjustments to make tripod mount oriented alright.

Then I mounted a 39mm to 42mm ring and then a M42 adapter with programmable EMF chip.
So, I entered the lens specifications onto the chip : 180mm and f:2.8.

I shot some samples and noticed one thing : I can't reach infinity Confused
I tried to screw very tight the adapter but it's not enough. When at f:11 or f:16, barely noticeable, but obvious at f:2.8.

Unscrewing the front part from the back part, I noticed that there is an inner alu ring just laying as a spacer.
I took this spacer out and tried again. Now I go beyond infinity but I was able to check the lens at infinity and it's alright !

Now what should I do ?
Sand the adapter ?
Sand the back mount of the lens (but it would be too close from the 5D mount and block the mount release button.
Sand the inner spacer ring (but I will loose some minimum focusing distance) ?

Some samples (click on pictures to open in new window with better IQ) :

at F11 without spacer, infinity ok

at F11 with spacer, infinity not ok but not much noticeable

at f3.5 without spacer

Olivier,

Oulalá! What a nice piece of glass! It makes a unique pair with your Mark III.
About focus: if you can make the lens work at infinity wide open, it's best. My bet is that the close focus sacrifice will be a minor lost compared to this advantage. But this is a choice based in the type of image i make, maybe your needs are different than mine.
Did you try the M39-EOS adapter straight to see if infinity is preserved? It could be an option too.

Bon travail avec ton nouveau et superb util,...

BTW, nice shot with the cat framed on the window, liked that

Renato

Great piece of lens you have there, Olivier. Looks very much like a Helios 40.

Nice kit! Congrats.

If it was me, I would sand the adapter and not do any lens butchery. This is because I don't approve of lens butchery and I would use it on M39/M42 cameras.

The best way to reach infinity:

-1 set infinity and then untight the screws on the focus ring
-2 check if the ring is free, and set it at shorter distance, then tight just one screw, and set real infinity by LV, or as you like better
-3 untight the screw, place the ring at infinity, and finally tight all the screws

Great combo. Forget infinity, shoot wide-open at distance 10-20m.

Thank you Attila, Poilu.

Renato, It is a MarkII Wink
I'll try the M39 to Eos directly to check.
The inner spacer is a way of doing both types of photography : infinity without the spacer, medium and close focusing with the spacer.
Thanks for the cat, I like it too.

Thank you Loke. It looks like a Helios-40, but even more huge !

Martin, I do agree with your position about lens butchery.

I'll try to apply Ultrapix infinity setting method which should be the right way to do it.
Thanks a lot for that ! Very Happy

Jure, you speak wise and it sounds to me that you know this lens and its better domains, isn't it ?

It certainly works great in that range. You can make fine concert portraits with it but you might also get thrown out of the place due to lens vicious look by nowadays standards Smile.

Do you think a white Canon 70-200 f2.8 has a better look ? Laughing

People fear the unknown. You'll see plenty of CANONs around Smile.

That's right ! Wink

For Loke, comparison with the Helios-40 (left) :
They were made by the same factory.

Other comparison with Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 2.8/180 in Pentacon-6 mount :
#1

#2

Sonnar is wider but shorter and has a 95mm diameter lens when J6 has a 75mm.
Sonnar weights 1305 grs, J6 1500 grs.
Sonnar has 8 blades diaph, J6 10 blades.
Min focus distance is the same : 2,00 meters.
Both aperture ranges are from 2.8 to 22.

I own a similar Zeiss 180/2.8 and would love to know how it and the Jupiter 180mm compare. Wink

If you have a chance to try them side by side....absolutely no rush though. Cool

(that's a cool serial number on the Jupiter too)

PostPosted: Thu Feb 21, 2013 11:31 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Hi Gary !
I knew by posting Sonnar and J6 side by side that I'll be asked for such a comparison. Very Happy
I'll do it.

The serial number of the J6 is fine, for sure. 000346. When was it made ? I don't know.

The Sonnar is a fine "starwars" version, as Attila name them.

Yes you could sand the spacer ring to reach infinity, or you could have a mill wright/machine shop turn a new spacer in which to sand if required, should not take more than 5 minutes to do, and you still have the original spacer.

Looks like a behemoth, congrats.

Thank you. Smile
Is it easy in your contries to find a place where to build a specific metal ring or part ?
Here, I don't know where.

If you want a perfect fit between your lens and camera, look no further than SRB-Griturn http://www.srb-griturn.com/index.asp
You will, of course, have to consider postage across the channel and whether it's worth the expense for you. But they can custom manufacture an adapter designed specifically for your lens.
They made one for me last year and it was better than I could ever have imagined, excellent craftsmanship. Very Happy

edit: mine was a Pentacon 6 to EOS, cost £70.

That's an impressive lens, I didn't realise just how big they were. The images from it are good as well.

I also recommend SRB Griturn, they have always supplied good quality products and been very reliable. And a dealer / pro photographer I know buys all his custom made stuff from them, because they understand the requirements of the customer.

Cool A very, very nice lens Olivier...don't touch the lens, take your time and work it out on what to do about reaching infinity.

Where did you find it?

PostPosted: Fri Feb 22, 2013 7:21 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Thank you Lloidy.

Moïra, I'll take care of that lens and won't do any butchery. Smile
I'll try to adjust infinity like Ultrapix explained.

How are you ? Everything's okay ?
I had it on ebay and it comes from Russia, not Ukrainia which is more and more expensive.
I made a quite lower offer than the price to the seller and he accepted it.
What's interesting is that his prices are delivery included.
