Carsten and others plan to buy a 40D
Please download the raw for evaluation (10mb)
http://rapidshare.com/files/95158876/face.cr2

small game
I would like you show me what result you get with other converter
It would be interesting to see what saturation and color balance others prefer.

Shotted inside a restaurant wide open F2.8 @ 1/100s underexposed 1 stops with a contax 60mm
This shot is sharp for 1/100s, if it was shot with flash or at higher speed it could be even sharper but this shot represent normal situation

He says "Contax 60mm" so it must be the Makro-Planar 60.

Yes it is the macro planar, one of my top lens
This lens is maybe too sharp for portrait even wide open but good to show the IQ of the 40D.

here's my go, Breezebrowser Pro 1.7.2

Because kid has perfect skin , soft lens is not important to hide skin problems. Razor sharp images same perfect than softer in my opinion.

Excellent both of you.

I will not try - Raw conversion is not my strong point.

40d looks like a good one.

Great result and color, mine look poor in comparison.
Just by giving back 1 stop Breezebrowser made the job.
I tried the demo and I didn't find curve and extra control but it seems the automated procedure is efficient and enough.

poilu, all that I did was to raise the exposure to make the histogram use the full dynamic range (the cr2 was underexposed).
The colours are those that you set in the camera, nothing less nothing more, BB Pro uses the Canon SDK so the colours are 100% faithful to what Canon planned for the camera.

By the way I love the native colours of the 40D. They are even better than those of the 400D which I think was not easy to do as 400D used to have the best colours of all DSLRs in my opinion - before the 40D arrived of course.

It's true that BB Pro does not have curves (it has levels however, with which you can set black and white points and the middle gamma), but it suits my style perfectly. I don't like to mess around with my photos. If I need to fix something, I can do with exposure and contrast controls. If I really have a desperate photo, I can always make two conversions (one for the highlights and one for the shadows) and use photoshop to merge them. But that happens very rarely. For instance, I did not have to do that once in my recent carnival series.
I agree that for people who like to postwork their photos a lot, BB Pro may not be sufficient (although one can always make a straight conversion and mess around with it in Photoshop).
Since when looking at a photograph, my joy is to appreciate the purity of the photo and the purity of the lenses that I use, BB Pro is my best option because it keeps the photo the closest possible to what the capture system was defaulted to give.

First,
Poilu, great shot! Smile

Orio, I tried the 7.1 version since I had problems with the trial version
of 7.2 for the Canon G1. If you have any problems with the software,
Chris Breeze is the guy who answers your emails. If I owned a Canon
DSLR his software would probably be my first choice (he's a Canon
shooter). I'm probably going to get another Nikon DSLR as I miss the
handling and response they offer. For Oly, I got the best results with
Bibble Pro. There seems to be quite a disparity amongst the different
designers when it comes to camera profiles, how they perform. I have
to say if I can get a Canon 20D for my target price, I'll be a Canon
shooter again, too. Wink

Breezebrowser Pro has great lens profiles or correction software.

For me one of the two real strenghts of BB Pro is that it uses Canon SDK
So for this reason it appeals to Canon users mostly.
The other strenght is that it has very good batch, proof, watermark, web page making capabilities, such that you can do all this stuff with just one software and never leave it. This is very handy for me.

Ravishing portrait Poilu, and Orio really made it sing. The comment about child's skin and lens sharpness is right. I have used the nikkor 60/micro in a similar way and the ladies do not like it! I am in love with my 40D and completely agree about the colours, although I have to say I still love my nikon D200 just as much.

Nice portrait and processing!
I'm still at the raw newbie stage using elements built in converter.
