Hi,

I'd like to know which differences have the L respect the Fluorite 2.8 one. I did some research on the web and I got the below information.

300 Fluorite 2.8 :
- didn't have the UD glass (1) . So , real speaking, which are the differences on the pictures?
- It is black, so there is some more risk to have lens detach
- different versions?

300L
- Some optic scheme
- UD glass . Someone said that it lost a little in terms of resolution. ??
- It is white , so better for long sun exposition

Are both convertible on EOS mount?

thank you in advance for your kind replies

They can be converted to EOS by a repairman, yes.

If you don't need the 2.8 aperture, there are some excellent 300mm lenses you can find much cheaper, I really love my Russian Tair-3 4.5/300, a very sharp lens with remarkable CA control.

One considerable difference is the focussing mechanism. The FD L is an internal focus lens, the Fluorite isn't. So the older lens get longer when focussing closer, shifting the massive front lenses further away from the tripod mount. Less practical when used on a gimbal mount, as the balance is shifted. With the newer FD L's internal focus focussing is much lighter, but when focussing close the focal length is slightly reduced. Both lenses are great performers. I've got both and am ashamed to say I haven't made a proper comparison yet but so far I can't tell their pictures apart. Handheld the Fluorite has a more classic feel, on a tripod the internal focus is a definite bonus for the L.

The FD L can be used with EdMika's adapter and be adjusted to infinity. Maybe the Fluorite as well, but I bought mine already converted. I was going to write that in normal use the colour of the lens would be hardly relevant, but I see you're from Dubai so it may well be a benefit having a white one.

Hello,

if you cant do it by yourself, the simplest way is to ask Ed Mika for an conversion plate he produce for most of the longer tele's of FD serie.. !

I did it by myself..

You find more infos here:
http://web.mit.edu/dennis/www/canon/fd-lens-info.html

The FD L has more "lens"-elements - one of them is possible the high quality flat protection filter. I think the SSC version does not have it.

I have DIY converted my Canon FD 300/2.8L lens some time before Ed Mika sold his adapter for this lens. The conversion is not an easy one - so I would recommend Ed Mikas adapter too. But there you need to adjust infinity with the internal focusing mechanism.

For the rarer SCC Fluorite version I do not know a conversion way that is yet described, but most likely a DIY conversion it possible too. As far I know these lenses are normal more expensive than the FD L ones. So I would recommend the L version.

thanks to the ZoneV link, i saw that the fluorite one have some other important differences:

- lighter
- smaller
- different aperture (f22 instead of f32)
- a slightly longer minimum distance focus.'

So, at the en,d there are differencerens beetween these two lenses!!more than i expected

Now, it will be great have some comparison shot

I have no experience with the Fluorite but once I compared the FD 300/2.8L with the acclaimed Leica APO-Telyt 280/4 which is spoken of as the best telephoto ever built for 35mm and I can tell you the Canon held its own against the Leica.

Resolution-wise it is sharp as sharp can be. It outresolves the 16MP APS-C sensor on the NEX-5n at least.

I have only the FD 300/2.8L, not the fluoride too. So no direct comparisson made. And comparissons based on different objects / weather condistions / processing (inside and outside camera) I would not trust for such image comparing.

Here I have some FD 300/2.8L images - follow the links nearly at the page bottom:

In the gallery most images have big images linked, click inside image mid-bottom.
