Which one is better stopped down to F5.6 between 1:1 to 1:2 magnification?
Any ideas?

I guess I will look for the latest 3.5 or the 2.8 version and the first one I find cheap is the one I will get Wink

Nikkor 55/3.5 Ai stopped down to f/5.6 gives same center but better edge/corner sharpness than Nikkor 55/2.8 Ai-S. Turn the table: For shooting at f/2.8 to f/4, the 55/2.8 Ai-S holds a clear advantage in edge/corner detail. This is 1st hand user experience on full-frame with serviced copies of the lens. Both are prone to drying out and requiring CLA

what do you mean by between 1:1 and 1:2 magnification. I thought both are 1:2 lens?

An extension ring of the appropriate length allows focusing between 1:2 and 1:1.
