The Nokton f/1.1 seems to me the best compromise between bokeh, sharpness and CA control. It is one lens worth thinking about, it also has a nice price.
Too bad the new Z Sonnar 1.5 wasn't in there. _________________ Orio, Administrator

I see that reasonably priced Nokton is really good performer compared to ultra-expensive Leica glass
the conclusion for me is simple - there isn´t as big difference in IQ as in price:) but that is as always _________________ equipment doesn´t count, good photographs do |

The Summilux ASPH is great, as expected.
The two Summicron rigid's difference is significant (probably due to different amount of haze)
And v3's drawing is very Zeiss-like, don't you think?
O, and I wonder if there is a similar shootout for 35mm
Edit: Found it:

It indeed is.
True, the new Noctilux 0.95 has the smoothest bokeh (for the fans of that - which does not necessarily cover the whole of us)
but the older Noctiluxes don't, and most importantly,
the Nokton highlights are almost free of green fringing, while there's a festival of that in the Noctiluxes' highlights.
This may not be a concern in controlled lighting situations, but since one assumes that such a super fast lens gets used often in the night
and amongst artificial lights, green fringing of highlights might not remain a secondary issue as it would be in a daylight lens. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Actually, one of the things i love about the Nokton over the Noctilux is the very short focus throw - half a twist and from infinity you're in perfect focus from 1m over the full range and back to infinity!
I find this lens really nice for quick shots _________________

Well, I don't know. I have shot with one at the Photokina this year, on my M8, and I was not really impressed.
It is extremely difficult to focus wide open and shows several heavy aberrations at f/1.1.
For a rangefinder I would prefer an f/1.4 or f/1.8 lens. A nice and still compact and affordable 1.8/50 would be fantastic. But such a lens does not exist. _________________ Personal forum activity on pause every now and again (due to job obligations)!

selfmade using a broken Kiev as donor will come for under 50.- but it might not be very practical
how about Canon f1.8/50 LTM, great performer and according to ebay completed in the US sold for +/- 100 usd. _________________ my photos on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/collections |
