review at http://www.mikekobal.com/blog/?p=857

in the video http://www.vimeo.com/16617991 , from 0:45 to about 0:50 you will notice something that looks like the optical lens construction reflected in the flare.

This lens was made for people who keep complaining that they don't make them like they used to.

I see them sold here in forums quite often, not sure why after that hype people get rid of it...
Maybe too big and heavy?

Perhaps the wives noticed the purchase? "You said no to my ear rings and then went and bought this for yourself!" Smile

Easy enough to reply: "what would you need ear rings for? You don't have manual focus jewels to adapt to your ears!" Laughing

I take it that you're not married. Wink

Actually, I am, but I trained Monica to accept with philosophy. She looks at my packet (or at the courier's truck) and says: "Oh... another toy..." and rolls her eyes Laughing

Ah, but I bet that didn't happen after a negative ear rings buying decision. Smile

Shall we move that to the "The Photographer's Café", seems it has drifted quite a way from the original Wink

No worries, I'll have some new sample images soon after I finish sifting through my vacation shots. I can just say this is now my favorite walkaround lens and I find it superb for portraits. Smile

i'm just happy to see a photographer show sample photos from a 'fast' lens other than wide open! bravo to using other apertures! Laughing

Agreed!

I have three f1.4 lenses but usually shoot @ f2 or higher with them. However, my Minolta 45/2 can be used wide open with excellent results.

Thanks. So far, I mostly use it at f/4 - f/5.6. I may have used it at f/8 once or twice. I like using f/0.95 for portraits and low light. The fast aperture came really handy at an aquarium visit and I used it for some handheld night shots too. I have ~250 shots I'll start uploading to flickr. I'll post some selections here. This was my main lens for a one week vacation - only once or twice I wished I had a wider angle, but otherwise it was a pleasure to use. I may have to change my signature Wink

This one portrait enough? Click here for full size.

I personally like how it renders:

If my equivalence calculations are right, it's the equivalent of a 33/1.4 on APS or 50/1.8 on FF.

I like how it renders the eyes - there is a shine in them that I didn't notice with any other lens wide open. There is also a slight glow that makes skin looks very nice - I used some lenses that had a soft glow wide open (Jupiter 9, VS1 35-85) and I never liked the effect, but in the Nokton it works beautifully. I'll post some samples at some point, but I want to publish my vacation photos in the order I took them, so it will take a bit to get to the portraits. I'm still going through the shots I took with my Lumix.

A couple more samples:

I most likely used f/4 in both.

The full set will become available in time here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurentiucristofor/sets/72157628299094815/.

Not proper portraits of people, but they can give an idea of how this lens works for portraiture.

Both are at f/0.95:
