Bill, cats are a necessity in the lagoon, otherwise the place would be infested by rats.
The municipality of Venice some years ago made a campaign to sterilyze the cats,
fearing an excess of felines in the city. The improvident result was that the population of cats drastically decreased,
but the population of rats boomed, and now Venice has an important rat problem.

The cats of Burano are some privileged felines for sure. Lots of generous tourists in a place where fish is king in all restaurants.
The black cat you see in the last two photos was fed generously by me and Monica with mixed fried fish.
The little guy was also quite discerning: he did only eat the bits that he liked, refusing those he did not like
and when we stood up to leave, he calmly but assured moved and sat at the next busy table
