I think this is not photographic lens.

My bet is night vision scope?

PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2009 2:54 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

It's a scope lens from a night vision device. With the device attached, it costs around $200 new. Apparently, one can raise the price indefinitely by just unscrewing it from the night vision scope and calling it a 'rare prototype' Smile

As far as I know, this lens has no aperture and is a Helios-40 derivative, providing very little resolution if used for photographic purposes (heck, it's designed to provide around 400 pairs of lines on the entire 35mm frame). Of course, the above holds true only if this is the same lens I am thinking about.

Interesting. I have asked seller and he claims it's M42 and can be used as photo-lens for 35mm camera... Huh (not that i have this money for it).

But for 200usd...how would this lens perform for photography? very low resolution? Could it be used for shallowdof-artistic use? I couldn't find any sample on google

It's about the same as Helios-40. Similar optical scheme, yet even lower resolution. It can only resolve a handful of lines on that scope device. Pretty useless photographically.

I've seen a 85/1.2 (yes, f/1.2) lens with a similar scope; its protruding rear lens element would prevent it from being used on an SLR. However, I've seen a test where someone used it in LiveView mode. It was horrendously soft with glare all over the place. And it didn't have aperture inside, so you're always stuck with mediocre wide open performance.

Also, as discussed in other threads, be careful with this seller:

Night vision lens indeed, coating is a dead giveaway for that, yellowish tint when looking through, since optimized for near Infrared transmission. Not (very) useful for normal photography.

Just for fun I have bought a Helios 85/1.5 that was designed to be used on a night vision device (so it lacks the diaphragm). I expect the worst, but at 35 euros I thought what the heck... If it doesn't work out, fine. If it does work, then fine too. As I'm a wide-open shooter the lack of a diaphragm ring does not really sound bad to me Wink

Sure, look here:

It's often mounted on the Cyclop H3T-1 or Cyclop-1 night vision device. Don't take the 85/1,2 but look for the 85/1,5. Make sure the lens has the M42 mount.

Wow! What a bargain! I also would have bought it without hesitation!

That 1.5/100 is good for one thing though: making a lot of money by selling it on €BAY as a superfast and superrare lens. That f/1.5 deactivates the sensibility switch in some colectors'/users' brains. Laughing
