Sir David Attenborough's will front a new three part series on famous London's Kew Gardens, called "Kew 3D", now "Kingdom of Plants", currently being produced for SKY TV's pay 3D channel.

((quote from an interview with 3dfocus.co.uk))
We are now using the latest macro photography techniques for David Attenborough's first 3D series, Kew 3D and it is incredibly exciting in 3D to take people somewhere that they've never been before. What the macro world allows us to do in productions is to show us things that we would never see normally. The fact you are seeing it in 3D just utterly surprises you and seeing flowers blossom in 3D, using time-lapse photography, gives us a fascinating and unprecedented insight into the secret world of plants. Nice. I wonder if "Kew 3D" is sort of a pun on the way "cool" is pronounced by some people (with silent L). Smile

Ooooh - look at my ignorance on show! Laughing Laughing Apart from two images side by side should I be getting anything else? I've tried moving my head closer, staring "through" the images on screen and I'm not getting anything other than two images side by side.

Here are some "tutorials" to learn how to see crosseyed stereo:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvShotHl1As

actually the trick is to look at these images as if you are looking at something close to your nose, yet you learn to focus further away and independently of teh inclination of your eyes. That trick with the index finger in front of your nose away about the span of thumb and index finger works quite well....

congratulations Klaus!
it is great to get recognition and to be able to 'work' ( and I guess get money ) with what one loves to do. I heartfully congratulate and secretly envy you, anyone who succeeds in doing so

Congratulations Klaus, another prestigious achievement!

The Royal Gardens at Kew always remind me of a Genesis song, which I used to listen to when I was a boy,

There is a accompanying 256 pages book out now, written by one of the staff members of the Production company, also named "Kingdom of Plants" like the whole series. It includes four pages about insect and animal UV vision and two pages have some of my images in it from that 3D film, here is one of it:

and here for the experienced 3D crosseye viewer, the stereo version:

(quote - from amazon)
This book accompanies the landmark television series Kingdom of Plants 3D: With David Attenborough. In the last 500 million years, plants have undertaken an epic journey that has not only spanned the ages but has altered the very make-up of the planet. It was a journey that began in a dark and barren world, and has culminated in a planet that is draped in rich colours, and overflowing with a diversity of mystifying orchids, exploding seed pods and snapping carnivorous plants. But plants are far more than just beautiful and bizarre. Through the chapters of this book we uncover how plants first began to live on land, how they have become linked with a multitude of animal and fungi partners, and how ultimately they have shaped both landscapes and cultures. With an introduction by Professor Stephen Hopper, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, as well as contributions from leading botanists and horticulturists, this book unpicks the strands of our planet's network of botanical life. Through its pages we reveal the extraordinary ways in which plants have come to live and thrive in all habitats, and we discover how they can provide us with answers to many of the problems that face humanity in our modern age.
