...by both, the little Pentax K100D and its sensor as well as by the Pentax FA 28-80 lens.

See why:

If we consider that this is more than 6-year-old technology, we should wonder why we always yearn for new cameras! Wink

Tony, that's the Pentax K100D I recently bought from Dieter here and a €25,- AF-zoom lens, a former Pentax standard kit zoom!

That's why I was so surprised. Shocked

The images with the crops were even shot as JPEGs and are almost just "out of cam".
The crops are not re-sharpened.

The other images were shot as RAWs and developed in ACR. But also only with vary basic post-production. Nothing fancy, really!

It just goes to show the mad prices so much phtographers pay for that extra shallower f-stop or that extra find grain of detail. It's bonkers.

By looking at those photos I believe 90% of enthusiasts spend way too much money on stuff they don't actually need.

Nice samples.

Carsten I had found that this 6MP CCD sensor ( in my case inside a Pentax *istDs ) shows the difference of the color rendition of different lenses much more clearly then any of my later cameras with CMOS sensors

Pentax seems to succeed rather regularily to get some little extra out of the same Sony sensors as compared to Sony or Nikon using the same sensor. I really had a hard time to get used to my K-x upgrade from my *istDs. The K-x is more responsive, has better high ISO, live view and therefore won me over, but I always, until today, preferred the output of this 6MP sensor.
You may find that Pentax has a great line of lenses, their modern AF lens line up sometimes criticized for not having enough "fast" choices Pentax has specialized in small, optically excellent lenses

Yes, that sensor really amazes me!

The Ltd. lenses are a dream, but they are also pretty expensive. And I won't start a Pentax collection. Wink

I'm fine with what I have for the K100D and I am glad to be able to make this experience. Now, I can understand why some Pentax users are so thrilled about their "little cams". Wink

Good detail and textures . It seems to me that the sensor is manufactured by Samsung (see the GX line of cameras wich are essentially the Pentax K )
Really a good buy , Carsten !

This sensor was made by Sony and e.g the also very good IQ Nikon D40 uses the same sensor ( and if I am not mistaken also one of the last Minoltas, 5D or 7D, great cameras which were pretty much the first ones with anti shake integrated )
( see: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/K10D/K10DCOMPARISON.HTM )

For some time Pentax had worked together with Samsung and as much as I know the Samsung GX-1L was a rebadged Pentax *istDL maybe even still also using the same Sony sensor. The successors to the K100D, the PentaxK10D and K20D had equivalent Samsung cameras GX-10 and GX-20, the sensor of the K10D manufactured by Sony, but the one of the K20D by Samsung. The successor, the great body K-7 had a disappointing Samsung sensor. The latest Pentax cameras K-x, K-5, K-r, K-01 again use Sony sensors

a friend of mine bought, after my advice, a very cheap Pentax K100D with an old 35-80mm AF lens.
Sometimes we are out and around in Hanoi taking photos. Comparing photos we take simultaneously of the same scenes I am embarrassed to say, for I like the use of my Sony NEX5N, that his usually have much better colors, specially skin tones, simply look much better and those taken with the NEX all too often liveless in comparison, no contest!! Shocked

i have to say, i find the sony sensors 'lifeless' in general, but i can see the comparison with the pentax side by side woukd be particularly troubling.

so interesting because the one camera that keeps tugging at me against my better judgement is the epson rd1. when i see photos i am constantly amazed by the depth, clarity and colir of a 6mp camera with a regular AA filter, lime the pentax. my head says it just cant be better than what i have, my eyes say something else! Shocked
