I'm always on the lookout for a digital point and shoot that takes AA batteries. The Fuji Finepix E550
has very low shutter lag, so decided to try it:

BW was done in Virtual Studio, the last pic is actually a portrait of my camera bag. Laughing

This Fuji routinely goes for $30-$40 on ebay.

Not too bad, but not too great either - the price is good & the batteries are standard. To my myopic sight these are 'natural' rather than 'sharp' results.

You're right not sharp at all. This was shooting in the top mode of 12Fine, maybe should try one of
6_ modes and see if there's a difference, will give me twice the frames, too.

I want to thank Jussi for his honest opinion (I didn't remove him from my Christmas card list cuz he
wasn't on it in the first place Laughing ) and will take this thread down tomorrow morning. I hate using/abusing
real estate, just because it's there. I should have read the manual and checked the settings before going
out with this camera, sheesh. Here are a few flickr faves with this camera, so I know it's capable of decent
results (in the right hands).

Lo and behold it does have a RAW mode, too, so will be experimenting.

Well your camera bag came out well, that's not unsharp. The manhole cover shows promise too. I wouldn't chuck this... and RAW Shocked That is tweak for a camera like this. And AA's you say?

Yes, that's batteries, I stopped going to the meetings ages ago. Laughing

I bought two of these, Jussi, so I can send you one.

your pictures do not look bad at all to me, Bill.
the "tombino" (don't know English word) looks detailed enough for the purpose,
which I understand is not to make fine art prints.
Standard batteries, decent quality, don't know what you would need more for a pocket camera.

Orio, thanks, I'll be experimenting with different settings and see
what I come up with.

Tombino works fine, Orio, for sewer cap, manhole cover. Smile

I like them way better than most compact shoot what I seen.

Attila, thanks!

In 1,4, and 5, I was walking not stopping when I took those, didn't know really what I would
get (LCD is not current state-of-the-art) until downloaded them at home. Shutter lag is stellar
compared to the Fuji F10.

Stellar here being for shorter?

Orio, yes, *way* shorter shutter lag.

I had one of these before getting a DSLR. I also had the WA and tele lenses for it. I was looking at the pics from it last night and regret selling it.

Bill you know that's almost as difficult to do as walking and chewing gum at the same time, plus much more dangerous: what if someone put an open Acme Tombino in front of you and you fall in it?

I was ready to kiss your foot then I understood it is not your pics, anyway your samples are good too Wink
a fast compact with AA batteries, viewfinder, 1/1.7" sensor, raw and decent results is always welcome, thanks for sharing

Martin, they are cheap over here, get another one!

Jussi, if that happened, then Tombino would be my tomb! Laughing In good light
focusing is quite quick, I have the camera on spot metering, 12Fine (RAW is not so
good with this camera according to the review, and many features are disabled when
in that mode, maybe it's because of the aging RAW software, too, hummm. Also moved
sharpening up a notch, so will see if that helps.

Poilu, yes, my flickr faves really showcase this camera, not my pics! Laughing Thanks!

Laughing
this reminds me of a saying related to the tombino that we use here sometimes when referring to sexy women,
but it's probably not appropriate for this section, LOL Laughing

Go ahead, Orio, don't be shy...heheh Wink

The E550 used to be one of the best compact digicams you could find when it was new.
So, of course, you still can use it to shoot good photos!

Carsten, thanks, I'm working on it. Took these down, not there, yet.

It's going to be a matter of using the right settings with the right processing, more so
than other cameras it seems.
