Yashica ML 50:2 on Contax AX - Provia

As with most 50mm lenses, the Yashica ML 50:2 creates lively and sharp images.

Just testing out various lenses in conjunction with the AX.

My ultimate goal is to have a basic 35mm system without all the "stuff" I've accumulated. Very Happy

The "crinkled flower" was shown before from another lens. However, this one truly showed me
some three dimensional effects.

Not to mention how sharp the ML50 is.

I don't know why I like to name images, I guess it's just one my idiocyncrasies. Shocked

+10 as the white flower was more difficult because of getting the exposure right.

Fantastic shot the "crinkled flower" Larry!

Thanks you guys. I missed this one somehow. I DO think that the 3D effect
is very prominent here.

For exposure, I spot-metered the beautiful gray in the lower right area of the flower.
It was obviously so close to a gray-card that I couldn't miss, although I felt it might
be just a little bit lighter than a true 16% gray, so I opened up 1/2 stop and hit it right
for the whites. Very Happy

Actually, I forget offhand - is it 16% gray or is it 18% gray?

Seems like a nice combination you are using Larry. I have the ML 50:1.7 and like it also.

Nice series as always.

Thanks Orio! I certainly could have looked it up, but I'm lazy. And it's okay to be "lazy" once in a while,
as long as I get my work done, right? Very Happy

Hey Ron: Yeah, I've seen online comparisons between the various Yashica/Contax ML 50 series lenses, and darn
if I could tell them apart. All extremely sharp, as is usual with 50mm lenses. One thing I DID notice is that the
1.7 seemed to have a little bit nicer bokeh, but it was all pretty close.

Congrats, Larry. Absolutely stunned with the quality of the flower shot.
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. It's very illustrative to see how you meter. Never thought before in looking for a "natural" gray card to measure the light Wink
The ML 50 f/2 is an excellent lens, it's the one I bring on my 139q always on.

Regards.
Jes.

Always great to hear from you Jes! Smile

Yeah, I usually try to spot meter with a fairly high contrast subject OR if I really want to get the bright white color nailed. If there is
a "natural" gray card in the image that fits into the dimensions of the spot meter's view, then that's pretty handy. When there is no
area that looks like it would approach a gray card value, then I have to go with metering the darks and the lights separately, and
try to come up with an average. It's not quite as precise, so I will usually bracket the average spot reading, whereas with the "natural"
gray card there is no need to bracket.

Of course, all that could be solved by just chimping with a digital camera! Very Happy But then again, I like film too. Laughing

Best to you, Jes.

Is this the small pancake ML 2/50 we are talking about?

I have it as well as Minolta Rokkor-X 2/45 and Konica Hexanon 1.8/40 pancakes and I can't chose between them as they are all great but have different characters.

I don't think it's a pancake type lens ian. Not sure though. It is about 2 inches in length, and I would think a true pancake might
be somewhat less than an inch long. This is all a guess, of course.

Mine isn't a true pancake either, just a small normal lens, it is very similar in size to the Minolta and Konica pancakes though.

Sounds like you have a different lens to mine.

I look at close ups like this and wonder why I bother. The crinkled Flower is absolutely breathtaking. Did you sit for days waiting for the bud to open? Shocked
