Hi,

when my wife spent some money I made few random shots with D700 and Nikkor 2.8/180mm AIS. I like how this lens performs. A typically ED feeling. I think this lens is a must have for a Nikon MF photographer.

Here few samples - as said before nothing special only to show how this lens performs.

I actually prefer this to the Zeiss. It is much smaller and I love the OOF effect. Very sharp, lovely "real" colours, like many nikkors.

I have this same lens. Won it for $95 AUS. It has a 1cm scratch on the front element. It is my favourite lens

I agree. "A must have"
Also evident by your crisp images. I use mine a lot and it almost makes both the 135 and the 200 unnecessary.
It can be a great lens for zoo captures as an example.

Nice pics, Rolf.

Yes, I sold my 135/2.8, because I have both 105/2.5 and 180/2.8 ED.

I had two copies from this lens both sold, great lens without any doubt! Nice samples like these help a lot to increase it's popularity.
One of my copies was used by 'pro' photo journalist it was scratched like hell and did work very well...

Yeah, I remember attending a Photo Club meeting. A sports Pro attended and gave a talk. All of his Nikkor equipment were not covered and not pampered. No lens caps, covers, etc... The AF Nikkors had scratch marks all over, some mists inside the 200-400 VR from using it in damp Irish weather conditions.

It seems to me only the likes of us are worried about cosmetic perfections. For PRO who makes a living out of photography, the only thing that matters is taking photos at the critical moments which sells $$$

Having said this, we were told his equipment is due for a trip to the Nikon Service Centre. Wink

It is a super lens!
Don't know if the optical formula changed over the years, but the first version of this Nikkor is in fact a faithful copy of the Olympia Sonnar.

Those samples on the Nex5N make me eager to try it out on my newly acquired Nex 5N!

It looks very sharp and produces great colours. I have the Zeiss and would say the Nikkor looks to be better.

Always nice too look back an "old" thread from Rolf........Anyway great lens for sure, great result on the Nex as well but I prefer the rendering on the D700....

+1
Agre, I sold my Carl Zeiss 180/2.8. Nikon 180/2.8 looks much better.

Sure me too, only if I could borrow the D700 that day, but the combo is compact and light weight. The nex is barely visible.
Edit: I mean the combo Nex+Lens Laughing

Most shot won't need PP from this lens. Very good color and contrast.

Regarding the use of Nex:
180mm on nex5n is some what difficult to use - I have to use evf and magnify.
I prefer optical vf and split screen on dslr/slr for anything longer than 100mm.
300mm is almost impossible to get correct focus handhelt, while Tamron 500/8 (55BB) is impossible.

I wouldn't say the D700 + 180mm is compact Smile

Photo taken with NEX-5 + Industar-61 L/D. It's a D700 + 180mm f/2.8 ED and a motorized panohead.

Great samples ! Colours are very accurate.

i had this lens, an ED version. As i bitch a bit for lenses above 85mm because they're too heavy, i bought this lens nonethless. Well, on the D700 it is well balanced, but a bit too heavy for me. So for those who can find this lens for a bar gain price , i've paid 200€ shipped, it's a keeper Very Happy

It's a totally different design; ED version is much better Smile

I'm not sure what you mean by the first version. Roland Vink tells us that, whereas the Ais version has a 5/5 configuration, all earlier versions (of the SLR lens) have a 5/4 arrangement. The earlier 180 mm f/2.5 rangefinder lens is 6/4.

The Olympia Sonnar is 5/3.
