Hey everyone. I was wondering if I could ask a favor of everyone...This week I decided to compile all information on all Russian m42 lens/m39 zenit lenses (with the exception of prototypes) into a word document. This information will range from simple specs to professional and amateur opinions. It will include everything from bad to good impressions, rumors, and applications. Now this is no simple feat and will take several months to complete but I would love to get everything together. Don’t worry I will cite sources when necessary.

So here is what I ask of everyone - If you have any obscure links pertaining to Russian m42/m39 zenit lenses than please send them along. Even if they happen to be in a different language...I will do my best to translate them.

Thank you
~Marc

Only Zenit lenses?

Word document ? That's odd (until you want to keep the result private)... use a Wiki with the help of some folks to collect datas.

But I will help you as far as I can for sure.

Why dont you try to use a dbase of some sort? It will make sorting and collating much easier down the road. The good ones will also export into a word or txt document.

patrickh

That way you can also expand easily into other manufacturers and make the project last years.... Smile Smile

Yes only Russian m42/m39 lenses. The list is long enough for quite a bit of information. And since most of the designs are not originally Russian I can add in impressions concerning the original source possibly making way for a comparative analysis. For ex. tessar - industar 50. The word document is simply a collection source where I can paste and edit from. I'm still not sure exactly where to go from there, though the suggestions help.

I would be honored to publish something on this site Attila. I plan to make all other camera sites obsolete mwhahah...just kidding.

But what really inspired me to do this was a friend from the zenit camera forum. He is the administrator and probably the one person that truly got me into Russian photography. His site was a continual resource to me and with his guidance I actually took apart my zenit B and my collection has simply sky rocketed in size. He has recently fallen on hard times and is now selling most of his equipment off. Though the site will still be up...most of it will be stripped and the zenit camera forum might not be as strong as it once was. So knowing this I would hate to see someone pass over these great lenses because the information was simply unavailable to them. That’s why I plan to do the most thorough and thoughtful job that is possible. Even great books such as Princelle’s don’t offer opinions and I have never really seen a comprehensive take on any of them – only bits a pieces. So all I want is to combine those pieces.

Thanks
~Marc

Wiki is the key my friend !

A wiki is software that allows users to create, edit, and link web pages easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. They are being installed by businesses to provide affordable and effective Intranets and for Knowledge Management. Ward Cunningham, developer of the first wiki, WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as "the simplest online database that could possibly work". One of the best known wikis is Wikipedia.

wiki is a technology to allow many people to collaborate on writing a document. The rules and access control for collaboration are not constrained there.

wikipedia is one project to make an encyclopedia, with specific rules and conventions. It uses wiki technology.

Thanks Chris for the clarification. I was not aware of the difference. So, everyone could -for instance- use wiki to make his own encyclopaedias - of lenses, of cameras, etc?

Yes, anyone who has a web server on which they can install software can make a wiki. And it can be used for anything - notes, meeting planning, whatever. I use several wikis at work for that sort of thing. An encyclopaedia is just one of the things you can do with it.

If you are the wiki master, you can put access control (who can read, who can write, who can edit); thus, most wiki engines keep history of all modification, so you can do rollback at anytime Wink

Actually there is at least - known by me - two wikis dedicated to lenses and cameras :

http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/

http://www.cdegroot.com/cgi-bin/photowiki/

So I don't think it's revelant to create a new one if what Marc wants to do can fit in one of it: just create and edit new pages on thoses wiki, don't waste knowloedge in too many places on the web Wink

especially these two:
http://zenit.istra.ru/catalog/lenseslist.html
http://www.photohistory.ru/35mm-TeleLens.html (russian - can be used the google translation on this , but the translation will be far from correct).
Good luck .

I am tired about this game I did many times. my time and work more valuable than fix always what jealous wiki administrators removed.
