Are the AF Pentax SLRs also well equipped for MF?
Do they also come with a e.g. split focus screen?
which is your favorite AF Pentax SLR for both AF and MF, and why?
thank you very much,
cheers,

Andreas, the AF slr's have a screen that's just as worse as our stock DSLR screens, and none of them comes with a split focus screen by default. At least none that I know of and I have owned several AF SLR's.
If I would choose a Pentax AF SLR then it would be these (in order of desirability):
- MZ-S
- MZ-3
- MZ-5(n)
Maybe also the Z-1(p) but I've already had two that were broken (usually the battery compartment cover breaks).
The MZ-S and the MZ-3 are both fairly rare. The MZ-5 and MZ-3 have very easy to use controls (shutter knob with "A" setting and metering mode like on our DSLR's). The MZ-S is undoubtedly the best 35mm SLR Pentax ever produced (I'd like this with a digital back ) and it can even be used in Hyper Manual. _________________ Peter - Moderator

thank you very much for your prompt reply Peter!
the MZ-S really is something!
only leaves 2 more questions:
- do you know if one can exchange the focus screen on any of them?
- why is the MZ-3 more desirable than the MZ-5?
thank you so much,

You can change the focus screen only on MZ-S.
I can suggest you also: Z-1, Z-1p and SFX. All of them with interchangeable focus screen. _________________ M42 | Super Takumar 20/4, 28/3.5, 35/3.5, 55/1.8, 105/2.8, 135/3.5, 200/4 - Tair-11A - Helios-44M - Mir-1B

thank you very much ellepi, great to know!
btw. if anybody wonders, the MZ-3 or MZ-5 weigh 410 grms. the ZPs 650 grms and the SFX 665 grms, a reason why I personally will prefer the MZ over the earlier ZP and SF camera
best regards,

FYI: the screens in the MZ-5 and MZ-3 can be changed too.
Regarding the differences between the MZ-5 and MZ-3: the former has 1/2000s top shutter speed and 1/100s X sync, the MZ-3 1/4000s and 1/125s. The AF of the MZ-3 is better. And both of course have the "proper" mount so full metering with any K-mount lens. _________________ Peter - Moderator

nice..thank you very much Peter for coming back to clarify further!
The MZ-S is an amazing camera, but would cost me minimum 5 times as much and it is bulkier and heavier. I'll look out for a MZ-3!

I don't know much about these, the ZX-L (AKA MZ-6) is one that I have and it works pretty nicely. The controls are different and more cumbersome (for some operations) than with the dslrs, and who knows, the vf might not be the biggest/brightest and lacks a decent focusing screen. Personally, I'm not about to look for something 'better' _________________ -Jussi

Optically, yes (and incidentally Pentax's fastest 35-70mm lens) but the AF mechanism is unreliable and most are broken and unrepairable (due to lack of spares). Mine is jammed solid and so one cannot even manually focus it.
