Well, I got my F3 back from Nikon today and they said the parts to repair it are no longer available. So, now I have to decide if I take it apart and see if I can repair the shutter release myself or if I sell it on eBay (less the grid fresnel, of course) and buy one of the three F3s for sale three blocks from my office. $150 is a good price for an F3, even though they're getting on in years. I'm posting this to seek your input -- try and fix the F3 or just sell it for parts and buy a replacement?

David, if you're not afraid of fiddling with tiny delicate parts it's quite possible you can repair it, and if the release is just jammed it might be very simple indeed, not involving any serious dismantling. I think you should at least investigate what's required before you decide to sell it.

I have to disagree with Graham this time, but we are all different and I admit I enjoy the challenge myself. I keep a watch out for broken cameras and so far I've repaired two Minolta XD7s, a Pentax K2 and about five Spotmatics using parts cannibalised from other wrecks. The only problem I've come across is when it's necessary to use manufacturer's dedicated calibration and testing equipment.

Yes, or a hammer to get the parts apart.

So the first thing to do is get a repair manual: Click here to see on Ebay

And you're right to. On the basis of "nothing to lose" it's worth a try, I suppose.

I concede Surprised

The shutter went out on my 35 year old Leicaflex SL2 last year. Had no trouble getting it fixed.

The F3, like Lazarus or perhaps a zombie (but not the brain-hungry kind), is back. So, here's what a numpty nuts I am. When the shutter stopped working, I tried three different pairs of batteries. Putting all thee in the wrong way. Today looking at the F3s at Rayko, we had to swap batteries out in one model to test it and I noticed they were in the opposite way I had loaded mine. So I came hope, reversed them, and it works.

Goodness, I'm like a first-time parent whose child got a cough.

As a footnote, I don't feel so bad. Nikon's technicians didn't catch it, either.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Oh David, you of all people! We expect better of you, but we shall allow you this one episode of "duh!" Laughing Laughing Laughing

At least you can concentrate on the job in hand once more, and we get to carry on seeing your prolific B/W output Cool

FluffPuppy, this message adds nothing to the topic and doesn't help David with his F3. The reason you posted it is obvious.

I think you have been warned before. If the moderators see any more messages like this from you they will be deleted. I hope that's clear.
