I saw an Ermanox the other day for sale at a used shop. I can provide contact details if requested.

It looks just like this one:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://ic2.pbase.com/o4/94/6094/1/61511078.ermanoxb.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.pbase.com/image/61511078&h=750&w=506&sz=137&tbnid=cY8nRKA9M4rEfM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=61&zoom=1&docid=TqhriZzNzJZ0eM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=8KENT6XZMZSDtgfC2uSnBQ&ved=0CDoQ9QEwBg&dur=116

The one I saw seems to be identical to this one:

It's not about "need" but about reselling. Buy it and resell it at half the highest eBay price Smile

Why do you say that? I didn't say that they were going to mark it that high, they were just looking at e-bay to try to determine its approximate value. I expect them to price it below the two on e-bay at this time.

See, this is an example of whats wrong with the world.

Thrift shops are supposed to cluelessly sell wonderful stuff for a fraction of what its worth, thus richly rewarding we cognoscenti for our knowledge and taste.

Thrift shops that price things as guided by ebay means fewer windfall bargains for us all.
A very sad state of affairs !

It's not a thrift shop, it's a used camera shop.

And they want to sell it, not look at it.

Depending on condition that could be fair. Mind, the Ermanox pioneered available light night time press photography, and as such it is a museum grade collectable, but for use you'd better buy something else. The lens is very soft and low resolution by modern standards, the film format (6.5x4cm) is not made any more, and to bring the shutter back to reliability you will sooner or later have to replace the blinds (which will destroy the collectors value).

I was thinking that someone might want the lens to play with.

He'd better buy a separate lens or a wasted Ermanox with good lens - a cosmetically nice kit is far more expensive, and much of that value will be destroyed the moment the lens is removed.

I believe the lens is an 85mm f/1.8 of Zeiss manufacture ("Ernostar 1.8/8.5 cm"). Surely there is someone on this site who covets such a beast!

Lots of us do covet this. It would be very interesting to try it and just generally cool to have it. It would look great in a cabinet and its probably a good long term investment.

The problem of course is that for anyone other than the more well-capitalized collectors it is out of reach.

And as Attila says, it is disgraceful to permanently modify such a thing, being as it is one of the few in existence. At best its OK to restore it to a functional state.

And a true collector wouldn't want to mess with such a noble relic, even if only to restore it to functionality.

What a nice camera and in a very good shape.

but not about that...
From your ebay-link I found out about Erich Salomon(I looked for some more information ) and I was fascinated by his photos. When you look you realize that 100 years nothing has been done in photography, however, that tools is not so much, but the subject and photographer feelings is everything!
to have such eyes, to catch the moment! and the rest does not matter MC, AF, LV etc. Wink

When it becomes too easy, the talented leave a field. Photography has been declining for 40 years at least.

That camera/ lens is famous engough to start auction with a 1 USD starting price, if the dealer really intend to sell it.
I can't see that. He don't understand how ebay works.

He will sit on that camera forever this way (or as long as he can pay the shop rent; then it will be very cheap for some lucky guy)

I suggested he start lower but he said that he would not mind if it does not sell, as it is in superb condition. He would just keep it. I saw it and it is indeed in great condition for its age.

I lately started an 1,- auction for a similar collectors item. Bought it for 600,- a couple of years ago, goal was 1100,-, finished 1900,-

This beast is my holy grail....but I need to make mortgage paymenst, heat the house in the winter and eat food and deal with my beloved wife who still loves me... Very Happy

A thrift shop find for US$25 is about the only way I can hope to get one, unless I sell pretty much all my lenses......

Cool

I have 2 bodies and 7 lenses, more than I can carry now. And of course I'm going to buy more.
