Pentax SV

Having now got my hands on another Pentax SV after too many years without one, it beats the crap out of me why they weren't rated higher than a Leica* Twisted Evil

Leica* SLRs feel like holding a concrete brick, but holding a screw-mount Pentax you really know you are holding a beautifully engineered and superbly designed scientific instrument.

Graham

* I would not say the same about Leica rangefinders, which I find delightful to use... from distant memory Sad

I don't know about the SV, but the fit and finish of the H3 I had easily rivaled that of contemporary Leicas... Every panel fit together perfectly. Not even the slightest hint of misalignment anywhere. Since Exakta's quality had already taken a dive by 1960, I wouldn't hesitate to say the early the Pentax cameras were the best finished SLRs of their era.

The spotmatic seems rather average in comparison. Pretty good, but not great - so on level with basically the rest of the Japanese SLRs at that time.

Also I thought Leica's SLRs weren't particularly well regarded? Quality aside, the Leicaflex is a weird camera...

The SV is one of my favourite Pentax cameras. This one used to belong to Sir Harry Secombe which I bought at an auction of some of his belongings after his death.

Oh man, yes. Pentaxforums has a sightseeing SV - I added a Super Tak 28/3.5 to the package - that I'm due to get another turn with sometime this fall I hope... beautiful camera, and agile.

Some very pretty ones here !

I don't agree with the fit and finish comment on the Spotmatics.
My old SV is nearly identical in this regard to my Spotmatics. There are very slight differences in detail. The biggest difference with the SV is that its slightly smaller - you have to put them up beside each other to tell though. This is all quite subjective of course.

The Spotmatics of the 1960's were a cut above the Ricoh's and Yashicas (and arguably the Mamiyas) of the time, in fit and finish, but I think quite in line with the Nikon (including the Nikkormat), Canon's and Minolta SRT's.

What all the Pentax cameras had that most of the rest didn't, in those days, was clean and simple design. Of course, the Pentax cameras were by comparison short of some features.

What I always missed - and I've had my SV and Spotmatic for more than 30 years - is a split image screen. And because these are very simple cameras this is not easy to provide.

To sort out the pensioners.........How many can remember the Pentax advertisement "just hold a Pentax" Wink

Seeing photos of other SV bodies has convinced me - the SV is the camera equivalent of porn Wink

Mine has the clip-on meter, but different to the one above. I need to track down a battery for it to see if it works.

Please excuse the crappy phone camera images Embarassed

And, one of my favorite Pentax photos of all time, I believe George is holding a black SV:

Pentax is the Japanese Zeiss.

Pentax was a trademark that Zeiss sold to Asahi.

SMC and T coating were originally the same (developed together).

Pentax 28/2 and Zeiss (distagon) 28/2 were the same optical design.

I keep remembering (and keep using) the old word "pensioners" when it's changed now to "senior citizens" Laughing

Wow, that's fantastic BD! Very many congratulations. Smile

We're just now waiting for our first grandchild, due in March. We'll probably be in our 90s before we have any great-grandchildren. Sad

BTW, I'm old enough I suppose, but I don't remember those ads, although I do remember very well lusting after a Spotmatic! Smile

At that time I liked the Photography magazines but I was more likely to lust after the nude figure studies found there. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I've just had mine CLA'd by Eric of pentax repair fame along with a new to me MX and ME and I've tried really hard to become a modern photographer and move up to the MX but alas my old hands still want and need the trusty old SV( mine is an H3v ) Everything is where it's supposed to be and nothing gets in the way. And I just cant believe how it looks and sounds after Eric's sevice. I guess 30 something years of use had crept up on the old girl more than I realized . The heck with having the meter in the camera for me Smile

Eric

Some cameras were just designed right Cool Two cameras are like that for me, the SV and the ME Super. I'd kill for a digital version of either Very Happy

Well I couldn't solve the problem of a light leak in my Petri SLR 35, so slid off the detachable flashgun holder from the viewfinder, then snipped off the electrical connection, and it fits perfectly onto my Pentax S3...erm but I doubt I'll use a flash with a syn speed of 1/30 sec and the bother of plugging in a wire Wink
