+1 with Klypen. The model's swirly hair seems to be really in "tune"
with the bokeh.

Thanks,
First of all the girl is 18 years old.
Smile
Strob: SB 800 + soft box + big gold reflector from the right side.
I make some minor post-processing on her face.

dear Peterbald,

I am new to this forum and to manual lenses.I own nikon d700 and recently got helios 40-2.I know this is a legendary lens but i find that i got very few keepers at 1.4-2.8 apertures.Could you please give me some tips on focusing eg: do you use live view or viewfinder to focus at 1.4;tripod?what nikon to m 42 adapter?Do you use hood?Any advise would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Vlad,
Aperture 1.5, not 1.4.
I don't use LiveView , I'm focusing on green dot.
My model is old Helios 40 with m39 so I use M39-> Nikon adapter.
I don't use any hood but sometimes I use tripod when it necessary.

You really are conquering this most difficult lens. When she does it right, she blows the competition away

Very nice portraits, but my favourite is the snapshot of the young girl playing chess. It captures all her concentration and dedication!

Beautiful H-40 paintings !
I especially like the first one, when you were in your green period. Smile

Lovely portraits Smile ..
Did you modified your Helios in order to focus to infinity or at least more than 2 or 3 meters with the D700 Question

Pascal, thanks for your comment.
No, unfortunately just from 2 meters up to 7 meter.
I tried to use adaptor with small glass inside, I could focus to infinity but I didn't like the quality of photos.
Besides, I use Helios mainly for portraits, so inflinity function is not usefull for me.

Nice portraits!

I use an adapter with no glass too, i thinned it down a bit, 0.5 mm, it doesn t sound a lot but in terms of max focus distance it s more than a meter, or more. You don t need to thin it down all, just the inner radius part.

@peter: thanks for your answer, with mine I can only focus up to 3 meters max, it's ok but can be sometimes a little bit too short...
@thomas: interesting, could you may be share a picture of the modified adapter?

PostPosted: Wed Nov 23, 2011 4:28 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Yes, a picture is going to be better than my english Smile , i used a Dremel tool, but with a lathe it can be done much better. If you look at the adapter from side, when it s mounted on the lens, you ll see a gap between it and the lens, to reduce it thin the adapter, if you examine it better, you ll see that only a part of the adapter makes contact with the lens. It s enought to thin, shave, that part only.

I hope this helps.

Stunning results on that last set ! the lens renders perfect

i'm hesitating of giving m42's a go on the D700, but i might try seeing what it can achieve : )

any good adapters recommandations ?
