I've been trying macro frost pictures this fall.

The play of sun and ice is the whole point of these shots, and metering has been a challenge. Usually I try to avoid clipped highlights, but if I underexpose enough to keep the sparkly ice crystals from blowing out, the rest of the image suffers.

I'm tempted to expose for the scene and let highlights blow if necessary. If perfectly white ice crystals come out 100% white in the image, that's probably an acceptable outcome.

A few clipped highlights here, I don't think it harms the image, opinions?

I may have to embrace the dark side and try some discreet HDR Cool

I think it looks ok. 100% white will blow out.

HDR?? Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes I often see this done to death and make the image look fake. If you go down that road, then less is more.

HDR is controversial with good reason, some of that stuff is incredibly ugly. But it can be used subtly.

I once saw a beautiful HDR picture from inside a cathedral, you could clearly see the stained glass windows and also the details of the interior. A quick google didn't find the pic I'm thinking of Sad here's a similar shot that's less artistic but with great technical execution, the details are visible and the colors look real.

Here's a couple of frost macro HDR shots that give me hope and inspiration -
