I have 3 Fed-2s here. One is having this issue.
It tried to scratch it away with a screw driver but it's not dirt etc. It's a soft metal.
What is this? Copper? Brass? Is there a way to remove these spots except varnishing the whole body or to make the whole camera golden? _________________ I'm not a collector, I'm a tester

Many Russian camera tops and other parts ( for ex. shutter speed dial, viewfinder rings and etc. ) where made out of cooper/brass and then painted with silver ( i believe silver powder ) paint. In your case I think the paint is simply coming off. I have seen several cameras on ebay, which where "chromed" in gold , however they only had their first lair of paint scratched off , and where polished.
I would suggest repainting the camera with silver powder paint.

Is it paint? It doesnt seem soft enough to be paint. I always thought it was electroplating. _________________ Peter - Moderator |
