Yup, I bought a BeerCan. To be exact the manual focus version of this lens.
The Minolta MD 70-210 f4. A favorite zoom of mine that I finally bought a copy of. Very Happy
As normal, I'm gambling, it was listed as a parts lens.
This is more then I normally pay for Minolta lenses, but I'm still happy with the price. Smile
Any other BeerCan shooters on the forum?

Got the actual AF "beercan", though I'm not sure it is the same lens, here's a sample 75mm @f4

Thanks for posting. Smile The Minolta AF BeerCan came out in 1985. It was based on the 1983 Minolta MD 70-210 f4. They are optically identical, but I believe there is a difference in coatings.

Of Course the real BeerCan is the AF version. It was named for it's size and shape.Over time the name has come to include the MD sibling also.
How do you like yours? I'm really looking foward to shooting with the MD version. Very Happy

One of my favourite lenses, though it's not very good as a actual tele lens, lots of CA, a bit soft, slow AF - I use it mostly for shooting portraits. As they say all minolta/sony owners have to try this one Smile. I'm not sure, but there was some info saying these lenses were based on leica design.

I agree with this summary. It can do some nice portraits and shorter length shots. Not for me as a tele though.

I will be interested to see if the MD version is similar Smile

Yes, I looked it up to make sure but it was a Leica/Minolta joint design.

I tried it once (the AF beercan) this year. I could not believe how slow it is to autofocus. At the end I turn to manual focus. Smile

Depends on your camera's motor too, I had the alpha a300 - it was very slow and sometimes hunted, a700 is another story, much faster, but still on the slow side. One thing I liked about it, that was making focusing easier - the lens stays focused, while you can zoom (there's a term, can't recall it now Smile ), i.e. you can focus at it's wide end (which focused quite fast even on my a300) and then zoom how much you need.

I will post some test samples after I get it. Hopefully there are no major problems with the lens.

This I have to try - the stay focus thing. Never knew that.
By the way, it was used on an A700.

I use the Beercan on the A700 and with the 700 set to fast focus this thing is very quick, maybe an issue with that lens, now my tamron 300mm that is slow even on fast.
PS the beercan is a lovely lens i have some very nice pics taken with it
Here is a motorsport day i did only using the beercan

Thank you for posting the pictures. I can't wait to get mine so I can shoot with it. This will be my main zoom. I still need to pick up a Minolta 35-70 3.5 to go with it.

I haven't heard from the Leica shooters yet. There was a Leitz version that was optically identical to the MD and AF versions of this lens. I've heard but don't know if it's accurate they were quality tested before being sold as a Leica. I'd be curius to know how accurate this info is.

So are there any Leica, 70-210 f4 Vario-Elmar R shooters on the forum?
I think it would be cool to have an open thread and post pictures from all versions of this lens.

I have the AF beercan. A good lens, but not as good as the hype. It does suffer from CA and isn't as sharp as my primes, but that is a given. I use it on an A200 and the focusing is quite fast in my estimation.

If you need an AF lens, my friends on italian forum say that's better the 35-70 f4 instead of 3.5/4.5
Here some samples(looks to the rokkor's picks):

I had the Af beercan for years, used it with a Minolta 7000AF.

Loved the colours and sharpness, hated the extrememly slow AF so much I usually turned AF off and focussed it manually. Because it is parfocal I used to zoom in all the way to focus then zoom back out before taking the shot, this was very useful.

Extremely well built lens, felt like it would last forever, pretty big and heavy however and I just don't see why it has garnered so much hype. It's a really good lens but the hype does surprise me.

I used to have both and I like to AF version more than the manual version.....

D7D + Minolta AF 70-210/4

Hype wise it dosen't suprise me. Colors, sharpness, Bokeh, Parfocal, but this lens has to be a cult lens for a couple other reasons also.

Pedegree. Very Happy Remember it was made in 3 versions, MD, Leica, and the BeerCan. So you got the brag factor. My lens has the same optics as a Leica lens. Smile

In reality the Hype is probably based on the nickname of the lens. Who wouldn't want to shoot with a BeerCan. Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

Apart from the hype and the 'Leica'-interior, there is something weird about the beercan in my experience. On normal subjects, the beercan performs like any other good 70-210mm zoom, not better or worse. I can't even tell the difference in results between a beercan and for example a Tamron 103A. However, everything suddenly changes when you start making portraits, when a pointed at a human face, the beercan seems to be in it's element. Therefor my beercan is most used for 'life-portraits'

AF-speed looks depending on the camera it is used on. On my KM 5D it focusses rather sluggish, on the Alfa500 it focusses very quick. For streetportraits, focussing can be quickened by prefocussing the lens on a point near the expected working distance. Things work so quick, i have my shot with the victim not even realising that a camera had been pointed at him/her.
So apart from being heavily hyped and having Leica-guts, my beercan is one of my favourite items in the glass-department.

I picked up my Manual Focus version of the BeerCan today from the Postoffice. I bought it cheap as a parts lens, knowing it had an appeture problem.
I was hoping it would be stuck wide open, but it's the opposite.
Stuck at f32. So I need to repair it before any serious use.

So here is my first shot with this lens. Of course it was a guess shot because I couldn't see the image well enough to tell it was in focus.
Contrast bumped and resized. No other PP.

I will replace this tomorrow with a better picture, when I can see better.
This is just to prove it's already fixed. Very Happy

Thanks. Smile

Easy fix.The springs were fine but the arm that goes over the rod wasn't in the right place.
I'm really happy with the lens it's in EXC or EXC + condition and I paid USD $24.51 with shipping. So it did turn out to be a bargain. Very Happy Very Happy
It was listed as a parts lens so it was a gamble.

Lovely rose. Looks like I should take out my AF Beercan from cold storage. Wink
