Hi

I recently picked up an old Zenit SLR with a Mir 1B on the front.

I also have the Mir 1 1958 Brussels version.

The 1B is a much more modern lens with a different manufacturing logo on it compared to the big solid older Mir 1.

I've had a quick search but can't find any info on the difference and wondered if anyone could enlighten me.

Thanks.

same russian lenses were manufactured in many different factories and each factory had it's own logo

mir-1 is m39 mount lens
mir-1b is m42 mount lens

There isn't a logo visible on that pic. Can you send another one of the logo? Or you can identify it yourself here:

My 1B is N87xxx with the Vologda logo, so it's 5 years older. The basic preset design looks the same but the grips are very different.

According to the link it's Vologda... you can just about make it out on the lens cap.

Ah yes, but that's the cap! The cap with mine has the LZOS logo. Smile

Luckily it matches the logo on the lens itself!

Just got to decide which one to keep now.

I too bought a Mir a couple of weeks ago but it is the "original" Mir-1 which has I have learned is the only one you can compare to the Flektogon, quality wise. The other variations 1B, 1V, whatever, are supposedly inferior, dunno if by optical formula differences (I doubt it).

I think the problem is the general soviet quality control issue from the 70's 80's not the formula. So you can get a brilliant lens or not ..

I am still yet to test it which I intend to do this weekend but one thing I don't like, at 70cm the minimum focusing distance is huge considering it's a sub 50mm lens. Not very fond of that since I enjoy preserving minimum close focusing capabilities other wise it is just too limited for the subjects I usually pick.

Well for what it cost me I can always get my investment back anyway.

I know users (only three) who look for j-9 or Mir-1 or 1.B, but only made in 1971. They told me that because of the good control of that year. I don't know.

Anybody knows ?

2 russian links on the Mir-1 and its different versions :
http://www.photohistory.ru/1207248187959276.html
http://www.zenitcamera.com/archive/lenses/mir-1.html

I don't know wether it will work. Here are the google translations :

I have a Мир-1В, made in 1985, same as this one : http://forum.mflenses.com/fs-mir-1b-37mm-f-2-8-m42-mount-t27867,highlight,%2Bmir+%2B1b+%2B37mm.html
B is for Vologda as mentionned before.
Vologda Optical and Mechanical Plant, Vologda.
Its plastic crystal box and its caps have the letter "B" with a beam passing through it, stylized bow and arrow.
Originally the company was referred to as the Vologda Instrument-Making Plant "Ray" (a division of VOMZ).
The emblem was used until the late 1980s.
It was then replaced.

I'm getting ready to buy a Mir-1B N85032414 next week. I don't see a logo on the lens. Anyone know it's year/pedigree?

1985, Mark. Like mine.
The two first numbers give the production year.
It surely has been produced in Vologda. The logo should be an arrow through a bow. It's on the cap or under the plastic crystal box's bottom.

and... it is on the front ring !!!
I can see it on your picture between the serial number and the name. I thought it was a "+". In fact it's an arrow on a bow. Wink

Yep definitely on the front ring, a bit small but it's there.

I always thought a Mir 1 was a Mir 1 was a Mir1.
Wasn't aware there were so many versions.
All we need now are some comparisons between them!

And just remember that they don't neccessarily work on FF cameras. Wink

Yes. Be careful with the back of the lens with 5D and 5D². Mirror hits...
