Y'all are really a bad influence... Wink

I just bought 3 non-ai lenses...

Vivitar (Kino) 135 f2.8
Tamron 35-70 f3.5 CF Macro BBAR MC Adaptall
Tamron-F 85-210 f4.5

Now to get them ai'd so I can use them. Very Happy
Anyone know where I can get these done?

Hi cheryl,

As far as AI conversion,

I have used John White in the past and have been very satisfied :

Thanks Paul...

Does he do other than Nikon lenses?
From his website I was not certain if he did the other brands...

Cheryle,

I am not sure if he does 3rd parties, I have only sent Nikkors, but it certainly would be worth the call to find out. He probably decides on a lens by lens basis.

I have called, but he is out, so I emailed the info to him...

Now to find an adaptall conversion from non-ai to ai... Smile

Wouldn't the easiest be just to buy an N/AI adaptall Laughing

PostPosted: Tue Aug 09, 2011 2:36 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

That is what I have... but I would like to buy the ai or ais or whatever
(I am still learning about these)...

I cannot use the non-ai on my cameras... Smile

This is the Adaptall F-system lens I have. It is non-ai...
Tamron 35-70 f3.5 CF Macro BBAR MC Adaptall

How do I make this AI ?
Where do I get a correct adaptall unit or ??

You do not need to do a thing, as your Adaptall[2] mount is actually Ai-S spec. Notice the black coupling ridge and the 'N/AI' (Nikon/AI) on the mount.

As far as your other "non-Ai" lenses are concerned, they will more than likely mount fine without interference, as generally only Nikkors have aperture rings which protrude beyond the mount itself, which interferes with the AI metering and minimum aperture tabs of modern bodies.

Hi Chayelle,

We sometimes abbreviate non-AI on here, but I think the N/AI marking on your lens mount stands for Nikon / AI. I am pretty sure it is AI. Did you try mounting it on your cameras?

Ok Embarassed I thought the N/AI meant non-ai...
Whew... I am trying to learn about this stuff... But, I was not certain,
and did not want to damage my cameras...

Thanks much, Andrew!! Smile

I will go try this lens on my camera...
I bought a couple more lense which (I am pretty sure are non-ai), and
with this marking on the lens I thought this lens was also non-ai...

Thanks for your help, Paul...

Generally, if a third-party lens is non-Ai, it will say 'N/F' or 'Nikon/F' on the mount, if anything at all.

I will note that Andrew, thanks... Smile

Usually if the lens/mount has tiny aperture numbers back of the prong, right at the mount end of the lens, it's an Ai... that's so the camera can show you the aperture via a wee window (talking about the old cameras here). So that's another way to narrow it down, Ai or non Ai.

Thank you, Jussi...
some good information here to help me a bit more!
I'm getting a good file... Smile

I snapped some verrrry quick pics I took with the Adaptall 35-70 f3.5 and
D700... verrry heavily cropped.
I am so impressed with the ability of this little lens. These were all handheld.

There was no PP, straight out of the camera except for heavy cropping to resize.
When I can go out to shoot something I will have confidence in its ability.

All @ f5.6 iso 200 1/60 sec at 70mm

[I have these pics very small on my puter to put here, but they have come
out so large. Is there a way to make them smaller?]

Jussi, are these the little aperture #'s you were indicating?

Those are the very ones. Note also the ridge that's inside your oval - that's the aperture coupling ridge Andrew mentioned. Once you get used to seeing these things it becomes easier... I know I had a learning curve with the Nikkors.

With all of your help I am "starting" to understand. I always read and
try to learn as much as I can before I ask questions, but then I ultimately
need some guidance... A big thanks to everyone. This is a very helpful,
friendly forum!

When I see some of the names some of these other lenses whew...
I am so lost. But, I am more familiar with Nikon (af) gear.
So this MF is a bit easier for me having that base.

You are most welcomed, there are a fair few other sites with good information too. To my mind the MIR site is a bit too "gear-head" though, but it serves its purpose nonetheless.
