Should I buy it for use on my EP-1? The guy only wants $100US for it. I've been wanting an 85mm and this will keep me from spending the cash on the Oly lens Very Happy
Anyone have any experience with it.

If it's in nice shape, I'd buy it just for its investment value. $100 is way under market for that lens if it's in nice condition.

Settles that matter then. I'm going pick it up early tomorrow morning. I'll post some shots of the lens itself, but test photos will have to wait until I get my adapter in.

OK, here is the lens. It has a bit of masking tape on it but I'm going to do my best to get that off. Ones question, is this the M39 mount or is this the LTM mount? I have a M39 mount to micro 4/3 adapter on the way because of another strange lens I picked up(I'll start another thread for that one Very Happy)

LTM is M39!

LOL now I feel dumb. I think this baby is going to serve me well. The glass is pristine and the focus is smooth as well as the aperture blades.

incredible deal, congrats

Not quite as spectacular, and close to market price, I indulged in this Canon RF lens today:

I also picked up a 135 3.5 LTM off fleabay today for $62US. Not a great deal, but I figured it would be a nice friend for the 85.

Sweet! The "secret" as you prolly know, is the 100 f/3.5, which comes in several versions, from 184 to 220 grams, optics the same, and supposedly really excellent.

The black version can be had easily for 75USD.

To show the incredible deal this 85 was, here is a very good buy on the far less desirable f/1.9, which just took place:

I've been watching 135/3.5s on eBay for a while now, and I have yet to see one in clean shape that has RF coupling for anywhere near that cheap. So if your135/3.5 is RF-coupled, that's a good deal too.

Not quite sure what you mean by "RF coupled" but here is the auction:

Dang, what a deal!

If you look at the rear of the lens, you see that brass tongue that protrudes slightly past the threads? That tongue engages a wheel at the top of the lens opening that, when pressed in and out, moves the amber rangefinder focusing circle inside the viewfinder. So as you rotate the focusing ring of the lens, the tongue (aka "cam") moves the rangefinder mechanism so accurate focusing can be achieved.

So anyway, lenses that don't have these RF cams are cheaper, but can only be range-focusing. Range focusing is acceptable for wide angle lenses with their comparatively large depth of field, but things get really iffy with lenses longer than normal that aren't coupled because of their shallower depth of field. But they're out there. The Jupiter 11 135mm is a prime example -- unless it's a Viso lens or something, which I don't think it is.

There is no better deal on ebay than an auction which closes during or near the superbowl!

It's basically 1/2 off, unless the item has already been bid way up.

You don't see the last second bidders jumping in during the game, hehe.

Huh, really cool info, kinda guess I got lucky with that one too then.. Ugh my wife is going to kill me, I think I have like 7 different camera related goodies coming in next week Laughing

Emphasize the fact that they are investment-grade collectibles. If she doesn't look like she's buying your explanation, show her eBay auctions. Hopefully, though, she won't ask the obvious question my wife does when I tell her of the investment quality of my purchases. Which is, "So, when are you gonna sell it?" And the answer to that, of course, is, "One doesn't liquidate ones investments without having a very good reason for doing so."

I have a few collectible classic motorcycles and my mother, who is invested in gold, can't stand the idea that I own motorcycles. She asks me periodically when am I going to sell my bikes, and my response to her is always the same: "When are you going to sell your gold?"

that's what I tell myself, cooltouch

Very interesting to look at the various canon RF 85mms

The first version f/1.9: 605 grams
second version (still chrome) 405 grams!!

F/2.0 ver1: 556 grams
ver2 615 grams!!! yow!!
both chrome

Finally the masterpiece (but ugly):
f/1.8
470 grams

The 85 has a reputation as being HEAVY, yet as we see, it very much depends on which you have.

Now I wish I new the deifference in formulas and construction!

All are 6 element, exception the f/1.8 which is 5.

They are all supposed to be fine lenses, with the 1.8 considered "superb"

here is the 405 gram f/1.9:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/awrose/834418758/in/photostream/

you can tell by the wider center ring.

what a beauty!

equally so, but 556 grams, the version 1 f/2.0

On the left:

on the right is the 565 gram 135 f/3.5 veriosn 1

Btw does anybody knows what is the optical scheme for Canon RF 135 3.5 LTM ?

is it a Sonnar? Is the coating good?

PostPosted: Mon Feb 07, 2011 4:41 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Canon made the same optical formula as the Canon FL 85mm/1.8 lens for their SLRs (fits camera bodies that use the FL and FD breech-lock lenses). I've used one for years for general purpose photography and portraits. This US patent covers the optical design:
http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT3066575

Results with the FL lens are amazing. I use it with film cameras, but it should work on any 4/3 digital SLR, using the Canon FD adapter to mount it.
The FL lens is often for sale on eBay in the $150 to $200 range.
