Canon 135mm/3.5 RF lenses, and SLR lenses through the FL series, had a Sonnar-like optical design, as did the earliest breech-lock FD lenses made until late 1976.

Very interesting to look at the various canon RF 85mms

The first version f/1.9: 605 grams
second version (still chrome) 405 grams!!

F/2.0 ver1: 556 grams
ver2 615 grams!!! yow!!
both chrome

Finally the masterpiece (but ugly):
f/1.8
470 grams

The 85 has a reputation as being HEAVY, yet as we see, it very much depends on which you have.

Now I wish I new the deifference in formulas and construction!

All are 6 element, exception the f/1.8 which is 5.

They are all supposed to be fine lenses, with the 1.8 considered "superb"

here is the 405 gram f/1.9:

you can tell by the wider center ring.

what a beauty!

equally so, but 556 grams, the version 1 f/2.0

On the left:

on the right is the 565 gram 135 f/3.5 veriosn 1

I own this 85mm f:1.9 II, illustrateD (edit) here with the Canon Museum link :
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/s/data/50-85/s_85_19v2.html
This lens is SO heavy, it's incredible ! I don't believe it is a 405g lens, but still a 600g lens (I don't own a weight scales to check). But it is heavier in my hands than the FL 85/1.8 I also have (445g).
http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/lens/fl/data/19-85/fl_85_18.html
BTW the FL 85/1.8 is a preset lens...Surprising for such a modern design (and nice with a DSLR).

I'm sure you are right, the canon museum is not very reliable--a shame.

Mine should show up on monday---i'll brace myself for a lead weight.

Maybe we can find a scale at some point.

You are right, I guess the light 1.9 is also black, and very rare. This one has to be near 600 grams:

1955 Canon 85mm f/1.9

I do love it very much

outdoors:

inside (wide open 1/30 ISO 1250)

I am really amazed at the quality those lenses show. Also, seeing all that snow, I'm really wishing winter would have lasted just a few weeks longer down here. It's shorts and shirt-sleeve weather outside. We'll probably have to start running the AC in the next few weeks.

Keep 'em up!

Sonnar 2 over at RFF was getting me up to speed on this one:

"The 85/1.9 is a sharp lens, but the 85/1.8 is truely amazing. The main difference is wide open. The 85/1,9 was quite common Gauss type (like the 90/2 Summicron) but the 85/1.8 was a telephoto design CANON patented in all important markets incl. USA and Germany. designer was Jiro Mukai who did most of the last Canon RF lenses which were praised to fully reach, if not exceed, Leica glass quality."

the orignal patent:

http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT3066575&id=jMBjAAAAEBAJ&pg=PP1&dq=jiro-mukai#v=onepage&q&f=false

in 1973 Mukai won an academy award for technical achievment for development of the Canon Macro Zoom Lens for motion picture photography.

The only RF lens by canon after this is the 35 f/2, which is highly craved by the RF crowd, and goes for some real money.

here we go again, handheld wide open 1/50 iso200

2 100s

not bad considering I'm 127.5mm EFL handheld at 1/50 with a tight DOF centered I'm not sure where.

Fantastic!! I am amazed of these pictures as I have been watching this topic!!

Well -- Canon was an answer to Leica RF and they did this very very well and at affordable price...

the wonderful wide open sharpness of this lens means even as ISO levels get fairly high, the images are still usable, albeit softer:

again wide open 1/30 but ISO1600 on sony nex-5

all shots wide open, well after sundown.

I can't think of another lens I own which lives up to it's hype better than this one.

50 years old, and it just rips Smile
