Small corrections:
The Makro-Sonnar 100/2.8 is the Contax N variant, which can be converted (at considerable cost) by Conurus to Canon EF (but not to other mounts).
The Contax ones are:
Makro-Planar 100/2.8
S-Planar 60/2.8 (in the data sheets it's called Makro-Planar)
The S-Planar 60/2.8 C is the compact version that does 1:2.
Other MF lenses that do 1:1:
Vivitar 55/2.8
Vivitar/Panagor/Elicar(?) 90/2.8
Mamiya 645 A 120/4 (highly recommended for incredible IQ; not a compact lens of course)
Pentax 645 120/4 (don't know how well it performs) |

Yes, sorry for the mistype. Makro-Planar.
However, I have to make a correction on the correction: the last batches of the 60mm lens have been indeed named Makro-Planar also on the barrel. The S-Planar denomination only belongs to the first production of the lens. _________________ Orio, Administrator

ANY lens can go 1:1 with enough extension.
Easy, cheap 1:1 -- Industar-50/3.5 on 50mm of tubes. (US$25+$10)
Both my rather cheap M42 macros go 1:1 -- Macro-Takumar 50/4 (version 1, US$55) and Vivitar-Komine 90/2.8 macro (US$3) (I got lucky!)
Of course, any zoom labeled MACRO, isn't. Except my Schneider Betavaron 50-125mm enlarger zoom, which really needs an added helicoid to exploit its weirdness.
And there's another way to go MF-macro-prime fairly cheap: helicoid + tubes + enlarger lenses. A 35-90mm M42 helicoid (~US$130) + some 50mm EL (~US$5-20) + 15mm tube; or the helicoid + some 80mm EL + 45mm tube; et cetera. You can focus from infinity, to as close as possible. A bit less clumsy than bellows, if more expensive because of ridiculous helicoid prices. But this approach is certainly cheaper than buying several dedicated macro lenses of varying FL's. _________________ Too many film+digi cams+lenses, oh my -- Pentax K20D, K-1000, M42s, more

Naturally! But those I listed just make it easy since the matching tube is specific to 1:1 reproduction rather than "x" length tube for some arbitrary reproduction ratio and all sorts of calculations etc... _________________ David

I only add that with wide angles it is very difficult. Its 1:1 ratio is somewhere inside of the lens or you will have minimal working distance. Then with tele it is very difficult, too. You would need decimetres long tubes then what with light loss. Most easy is to achieve that ration with 50mm lens (or with true macro lens - compensating due construction). Then is clear why some old tele zoom glass has macro capability on wide end or better magnification is on that end. Howg. _________________ Shoot on analog mainly with

Those are very nice, and very affordable lenses indeed. I've once tested my Vivitar 55mm macro against the Takumar 55mm. I believe the Takumar was slightly better as a macro (I'm splitting hairs here), but the Vivitar excelled at portrait distances. Similar results I got from the Vivitar 90mm vs. the Kiron 105mm. The Kiron slighly better macro performance, the Vivitar 90mm better at longer focal distances. |
