I hardly fly so this might be th dumbest question.

I'm heading to Cuba in November and I'm contemplating on bring my gear. I'm thinking on taking my 5D MKII, 17-40 f4 L, 24-105 f4 IS L and my Asahi Tak SMC 50mm 1.4.

With the amount of radiation from that Asahi lense...do airports have gear that sniffs out radioactive stuff?

Others may know better, but I think you won't have any problems at all. I'm sure the amount of radiation is so small as to have no real-world significance.

Bud, nothing to worry about.
There's another thing that you have to do: take them on board with you inside a good carry-on.

I take lenses with me every time I fly, and the only thing they've ever been tested for was drugs!!! Yes, drugs - at Berlin's Schönefeld airport - but thankfully they were clear Embarassed

Thanks. As far as I know my gear is drug free. Laughing

Hi,

Since i have my K10D, i have been in the US and in other EU countries, and the airport detectors never complained about my Taks (including the 50/1.4) ...

Enjoy your trip and don't forget to post some shots here Wink ...

Cheers

Never had a complaint about the radioactive Tomioka. My 30D and Tamron 60B, on the other hand, have been swabbed for explosives.

The airplane you will fly in is more radioactive than the Takumar.

I flew from Cusco to Lima but never got tested, however Caracas (Venezuela) was a different story - it was all a bit too Midnight Express for my liking!

I've travelled with the Rokkor 58mm f/1.2 (more radioactive than the Takumar 50mm f/1.4) without any problems in airports around Europe. In any case the radioactivity of lenses needs to be checked at very close range or it will be indistinguishable from background/etc, so unless they specifically measure your camera bag for radiation it will not set off any alarms.

(Orio is also right that flying in the plane results in a dose of radiation that makes lens radioactivity completely negligible by comparison, but of course there still might theoretically be some restrictions on transporting radioactive materials.)
