Hi,

from a shooting yesterday evening I still had this lens on the cam. Made few shots during my morning walk with it. Not really the right lens for landscapes - but it works. All shots wide open at F 1.2

1DsMkIII & EF 1.2/85mmL II

Does it have a proper manual focus ring?

My Helios-40 85/1.5 was less than 5% of the price Very Happy

Very nice Rolf. #3 is very lovely. I'm not a racist either although I prefer RF coupling on my lenses Wink

Sometimes I see stunning result from AF lenses, but mostly don't it would be interest too see these images taken with MF lenses too. I saw so many stunning images from Rolf taken by different lenses. These are just not the same, this is come to my mind when I see them. Great captures, great scenery, but in pixel pipping remind me to taken with any compacts Sad

It is like always - pics with this lens polarizes - in every forum.

Many viewer like shots with this lens - others not. It is too expensive for the result, my 50 € lens does the same, has it a proper focus ring, the green is bluish, not different from my P&S and and and ......

Guys, this is one of the best lenses I own. And you can be sure that the people buying such a lens for much money know exactly what the want and what they get.

I was too lazy to change the lens at that morning and explained before that it is not exactly the correct lens for landscapes. And all shots are wide open at f 1.2 to catch the smooth atmosphere at 7 o'clock in the morning. And due to the fog and the strange light at that time the green was so bluish.

This lens is (one of) the best portrait lenses on the market with a perfect bokeh.

Rolf, this surely is a great lens! And I envy you for it.
(I hope that one day we can meet, you can bring it. Wink)

But you need to understand, this is a MF lenses forum so there will be some preoccupations against AF lenses for some of us here are rather dogmatic. No harm is meant. I had to learn that as well. Wink

Well Carsten, I have in general no problems with the comments of other members here.

In this particular case I know what lenses I own and the respective capabilities. So I didn´t feel harm.

On the other side the oversized gallery is for AF shots also and therefore I tought it would be of common interest to show images with different lenses which are not Leica, Zeiss or the 1000 th image of a Helios 44-2 or something like this.

But perhaps you are right. I will let it in the future.

Rolf I'm with you. This lens is the top of it's field.
I would trade my Planar, Biotar, and Helios 40 to have one (but never my Pancolar Wink ). In fact I just might after the number of mis focus shots during my last model shoot with the planar Rolling Eyes

Thank you Rolf for thoses samples.

If Oversized gallery is also for AF, I don't see why we can't post some.
If it is annoying for some people, why not create another Oversized gallery for AF ?

Also, I wanted to tell you that your avatar is very fine !

Everything's under control ?

My comment wasn't say here no place for AF lenses, naturally they have space here I did tell my honest impression what did come from past experience of Rolf pictures what are always superb and this one I didn't like on same way than others. Naturally perhaps I am wrong.

Rolf -- pictures are nice and really reflect the atmosphere in these days.

I was walking 8 o'clock in the morning on a street in Andover (Hampshire) I and there was no wind .. Almost every house had a spider net x 20 with nice water drops !!

It was absolutely superb atmosphere but I didn't take my camera with me. Shame!

Poilu, I can assure you that Canon could give a lessons how to make a lens.

They have been knowing this over years - I respect Canon as a great lens maker and innovator.

I have got a few FD glasses as a proof. Smile

Attila,

I don´t feel affronted nor I´m offends. It is absolutely clear that not everyone do like all images, ones are "better", others are poorer.

The 1.2/85 is a superb portrait lens, therefore more softer than others and I thought to try it out for these fog shots to make the images a little bit more smoothly.

Have a nice weekend.

Rolf, I'd like to see some portraits from your hand with this lens. Is that possible? I have just ordered a Canon FD to PK adapter (two actually, both with corrective lens element but I will remove the element from one of the adapters) and I cannot wait to use my old and battered Canon FD 85mm f/1.2 S.S.C. Aspherical. I´m sure it´s not as good as your new EF version Smile

Hi Peter,

problem is that I have no allowance for 99 % of the 85mm shots to show it here/Internet.

So I checked my private archive. No. 1 and 2 is a friend of my son during an event in our town with 1DMKIII (not 1DsMkIII - so crop x 1.3), no. 3 and 4 are available light shots within a vaudeville with 5D (not MkII) but wide open.

I like these last shots, Rolf. My buddy Steve Mark recently acquired the 85/1.4G for his Nikon DSLRs and here are a few from his D700:

the last is an SP of Steve

The 85mm is a great people lens.

I see carrying those heavy cameras has had a positive effect on Steve's arms Wink

Rolf, thanks for showing these! I really appreciate it. There's no doubt that the 85mm f/1.2 is one heck of a sharp lens. I hope I'll get some decent shots with my old one Smile
