I usually never see any dragonflies. Now that I found one which was willing to pose for me, I only had my AF lens with me: the SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 Limited. I would have wished for the 125mm Apo-Lanthar, but alas...

Most excellent. My favorite is the one where you look up towards the silhouetted dragonfly ...

Nice captures, which shows how important is the "human factor". Nobody will select 31mm lenses for insect macro work, but good photographer can handle this situation well as demonstrated here.
And the FA31 is really amazing lens (unfortunately, price is not so "amazing" :-/).

31mm is like a standard 50mm on full frame
1000 euros new is a normal price for such lens, on crop it is expensive compared to a 50mm F2.5 on FF
the FA reach 1:6.3, not really a macro lens but Spot used it to the max

I agree about great pictures, but I can't help thinking the CZJ 2.4/35 would have done them equally well and focussed even closer, for 10% of the cost.

Lovely shots. You must have quite a skill to move so close towards the dragonfly without scaring it to fly away.

Thanks for the nice replies! Smile

@Peter: I agree but since I don't own the CZJ35/2.4 anymore... Not because I did not like its output but I found it weak mechanically. I also think the FA31 has a better resolution.

On the other hand I was also wondering how my SMC K 28/2 ("Distagon Hollywood") would do here as it also has excellent close focusing abilities.

Congratulations Peter!

I am crazy about dragonflies.
Most probably your model is a Sympetrum Sanguineum.

Allow me to post a portrait of a female Calopteryx Virgo.
I recently printed it for a friend who liked it a lot.
