I found a MM version mint copy of Contax Sonnar 100mm f/3.5 in the "local" shop. I say "local" because it's really in Modena so about 80 km from here Laughing but it's about the closest I can find for used manual lenses Sad

This little slow lens, has two particularities:

- it is quite rare to find, as it was in production only for a little time

- it has the best MTF at 40 lines per millimeter of all the Contax teles, including the Planar 2/135 and Planar 2/100. In other words, it's the sharpest of all Contax teles.

Given the good price and the discount I obtained (free UPS shipping), I bought it. So now I have all three Contax 100mm lenses. Which is quite stupid, but - collecting lenses is not the smartest thing to do, anyway
Rolling Eyes

Tomorrow it should be here, I will report.

I found a page with some image samples. Quite poor samples I have to say, dark and badly complsed and focused. Seems however to be the only one page available with samples from this lens. A gap to fill here Attila Wink

This however is the AE version, mine will be a MM:

Samples like these don't tell anything about a lens.
Mad

I am stunned by the quality of these Zeiss lenses. I had not thought much about them before but their results are brilliant and their build quality and design is lovely.

Laughing
but I was not expecting it so sharp wide open. It's really on par with the best Leicas.
Only problem, it's a sunlight lens. There where you live, you could use it all 12 months. Here, for 3-4 months it's nearly unuseable.

Orio,

Do you have any links to other info, resources, MTFs, etc. about this lens? I have one on the way and I'd like to read more about it.

you can find mtf data from Zeiss

The MTF is linked by poilu above, I hope to be able to set up a sample page soon, today was too dark to use that lens for my purpose.

Yes the info on this lens is very scarce, because the lens itself is, if not really rare, at least much uncommon to find.

I could NOT hold myself strong. Seriously, I vocalized the word "Damn!" and spilled a bit of water from my cup onto my legs! Laughing

OUTRAGEOUSLY sharp. Gosh, you have so many "sleeper" lenses, how are you ever going to give them all you have? Wink

Beautiful find, Orio!

I know the page, but cannot find the lens there. The Hasselblad C/CF is a Planar, wheres the C-Y is a Sonnar and is not listed.

The link to the PDF is on the German page only.
The English page does not feature it.

Are there any users of this lens ? Wink
I`m thinking to buy this one(ae version) and sell sonnar 135/2.8...but first i must know about performance of this lens comparing to 85, 135 sonnar ae and 90/3.5 voigtlander...can somebody help Wink?

About comparison with the 135 Sonnar, I replied to your private message.
About the Sonnar 85, both lenses are very sharp, the 3.5/100 however is super sharp wide open, the 85 is very sharp wide open too but it needs one stop down (to f/4) to reach the super sharpness of the 3.5/100.
As for the Voigt 3.5/90, it reach the super sharpness around f/5.6. At wide open and at f/4 it has very good sharpness, but it is not as super sharp as the 3.5/100 wide open.
On the plus side for the Voigt are the Apo control (not 100% perfect however) and the close focusing distance.
