Hi,

I am reader most of the time in the forum and I am so tempted to try Zeiss old lenses after seeing photos in this forum.
Since I only have nikon body (D200) it is very limited for me to try M42 mount because of no infinity.
Recently I saw C/Y mount zeiss can convert to F mount with infinity (Leitax) and I am itchy to try C/Y Zeiss 85mm f2.8.
My question here is Zeiss is better than Nikon 85mm f1.8? If some one can share opinion, it would be great help to me. The pricing is not much difference for the two lens.

Rgds,
Wilco

On a budget i can suggest you to buy Samyang/Falcon/Rokinon 85/1.4 it`s better than N85 1.8 af Wink. I sold this lens because i bought Planar 85/1.4 - but i know that this lens(falkon, samyang, rokinon etc) is better than N85 1.8 AF...85 2.8 for my purposes is too dark.

The Samyang/Rokinon/ et al 85/1.4 is a nice lens that is sharp wide open, or at least doesn't get much sharper stopped down. Bokeh is nice and smooth too and color rendition is good. I think the Contax is sharper at any given focal length and becomes more apparent the more you stop down. The bokeh isn't great and it's not very good at MFD. That is where the Samyang and it's clones excel. It depends on what you want to use the lens for as both are good but for different reasons.

I have the Nikkor 85/1.8 K and its one hell of a lens. I swear it's IQ reminds me of the Zeiss; its got that pop! I havent bought the C/Y 85 Planar or Sonnar because of it. Rolling Eyes The 85 represents a big hole in my Contax collection; its a quandry I can live with, temporarily, after shooting this Nikkor.

Depends on which Nikkor 85/1.8 you have in mind. I have a "K" version, the really od pre-Ai one, and it's a very capable performer. The Sonnar 85/2.8 is superb; its contrast is extreme, and its rendering is smooth but not distractingly so. The Sonnar is capable of producing the most "3D" looking pictures I've seen. That having said, you would only be able to modify MM versions of the Sonnar to fit your Nikon camera (AE versions are usually cheaper).

Sonnar 85/2.8

Nikkor (K) 85/1.8

Question: is it possible to convert the AE to Nikon mount? Leitex conversion?

I have an MM and two AE's. I ordered a leitax mount for the MM but am not too sure about the AE's.

On a side note:

I got a chinese adapter with infinity glass and my advice: LAY OFF!

After spending a bucket on a good body and a small fortune on the lens, dont cheap out on the adapter.

I'll post some pix later so you see what I mean

The general consensus is that AE won't work with the leitax conversion. I've seen one person claim otherwise and said you could but it involved qutie a bit of grinding.
