First of all, isn't it a real beauty?

This is the AE version, made in Germany.
Isn't it a drama that my Contax-to-EOS adapter hasn't arrived yet?

Anyway.
I am new to Contax lenses. What about the lens shade?
If I have understood well, Contax produced some standard shade sizes and one needs an adapter and the proper shade size. Am I correct? What do I need for this lens? And how necessary do you find it?

I also see that the aperture only changes in full stops. Has this changed in the MM versions? It would be nice to have more fine grained control over the aperture.

Come on poilu and you other Zeiss guys, give us some more shots with this animal, while I am drooling over it...

Wow!
#1 and #3 are excellent!

PostPosted: Mon May 31, 2010 8:46 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

congrats! look in great shape
I don't use lens shade with contax lenses but I got some Chinese ebay generic for other lens
you can set the aperture to any values, the full stop have click, for others put in between
the AE have ninja star bokeh up to 2.8, some say it is not in fashion anymore but I see it sometimes in current film, tell us what you think about
my MM produce blue bloom in high contrast scene (white t-shirt in sun), I think the AE is better

Thank you. You are very kind. Very Happy
It was posted on 20/5 from HK, a few days before the lens.
However, the lens was shipped through EMS (= 3Euros for the customs, not 80 like UPS charged me last time...)

Definitely get ND filters. I have a Tiffen .03 (1X), .06(2X), .09(3X). To use f1.4 to f2.0 on the lens, I have to combine the Tiffen .09(3x) and .06(2X) ND filters to bring the light under control, to reduce the light by a factor of 1.5(5X). here are two photos both shot at F2.0 with the Tiffen .09 and .06 Nd filters on the lens:

1/8000 sec and ISO50 not enough?
I have a B+W ND somewhere, but it is 77mm. I definitely need some adapter anyway. All my stuff is 77mm. I am especially curious to use the Canon 500D closeup lens with this Planar. Perhaps then I will forget getting the 2/100 MP ZE, just for a while... Smile

The above were all taken with an AEG version of the lens, on a 5D or 5DII camera (can't remember by heart)
The Contax lens shades are very good quality, but less expensive metal shades are available on Ebay, that do a good job.
The aperture ring still opens in full steps also in the MM version of the lens.

nkanellopoulos,

I guess you could select a shutter speed of 1/8000 and an iso of 50, I thought the lowest the 5dmkII and the 7D would go was ISO 100, but , i don't believe you will be able to control exposure in every situation with just the shutter speed and with the lSO setting or the get the"best" results by doing it that way, correct me if I am wrong. All you have to do about the 77mm ND or any other 77mm filters you have is to buy a 77mm to 67mm, 67mm being the filter thread size of the Planar 85mm f1.4, step-down ring to use your 77mm filters on a 67mm filter thread. I have Contax lenses that have a 55mm filter thread and all I needed to do was buy a 67mm to 55mm step-down ring, $9.87, to use the 67mm filters from my Planar 85mm f1.4. But I knew in advance that the lens with the biggest filter thread size I would buy would be the Planar 85mm f1.4, which is 67mm. With any future lens I buy, I will just buy a step-down ring for the filter thread of the new lenses, trying to keep as similiar a filter thread size as possible amongst them.

Does anybody know wahat are difference between Contax Planar AE/MM and Contax N and ZF/ZE ? I`m wondering is AE/MM similar too N or N is similar to ZEZ/ZF?

PostPosted: Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:35 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

download the pdf from Zeiss
the N is a different lens
the ZEZF seems a improved version of the contax and have 9 blades vs 8

Does anybody have a both Planars (zf/ze and c/y) and can compare this two lenses?I am really curious - i can afford only for c/y but maybe someday.. zf/ze - but i must know what are differences(other thans sharpness/ca)
i`m concentrated on rendering; 3d etc;)

I don't have the Z, so I can not compare, but you can't go wrong with the Contax. It is just so good.

I also have the Contax-Version (not MM) and of my 20 lenses it's my favourite one. I use it on the 5D and only wide open with f1,4 for portraits and nature. I needed some practice to focus precisely because DOF is really short.

The most beautiful effect of the lens are the colours in combination with the 3-D-Effect, which is reduced when using f2 and nearly invisible @f2,8 in my opinion. If I want a sharp "normal" Portrait I use the Sigma 105/2,8 for example. If I want a "magic" portrait I use the 85/1,4. Take a photo of anything and you'll be surprised what this lens makes out of it.

When stopped down the blades look like stars, not very nice for the bokeh. The MM-Version is much better here.

I had a 85 AE and my friend has the 85ZE. Wide open the latter was maybe a tad bit sharper, especially in the corners. But at 1.4 is corner sharpness really that important? I find the AE to have more of the 3d effect but it's also more prone to CA and flaring. Also stopped down it has the ninja star bokeh so the ZE has the advantage there. I wouldn't bother with the ZE unless you have the money and like electronic aperture control which does give you more f-stops. But with the 50/1.4 and the 85/1.4 I would opt for the cheaper C/Y mounts.

And I didn't really care for the bokeh wide open so I sold it and got the rokinon 85/1.4 which is impressively sharp wide open and has nice creamy bokeh. Now I need the C/Y Sonnar 85/2.8 to compliment it.
