I have several systems in 35mm and need to cut down (considerably) what I will take with me when I move in a few years. I've decided Nikon will be my primary system, but will hold on to my Konica AR as well.
Here are my candidates for selling:
Contax 137MA
Exakta VXIIa (will probably hold on to the Exakta 500)
Olympus OM2
Vivitar XC-3, M42 mount
If I was to keep one of the above, which one would it be? I'm leaning towards keeping the Contax.
Most all my 35mm rangefinders will be going, one way or another. |

Yeah, the Contax seems the classiest, but my personal sentiment is with the OM2... but the real question is, how big a pile of lenses does each system represent? _________________ -Jussi

Here are the lenses:
Olympus: 28mm, 50mm, 75-150mm zoom, all Zuikos, all very good.
Contax: 28mm ML (poor man's distagon), 50 CZ planar also 50 ML Yashica,
and 135 ML Yashica.
I have the extension tubes for both to make the 50 prime go 1:1.
The Contax takes 2 AA batts, which are easy to find in foreign countries and
is a dream to shoot with, not that the OM2, isn't.
Hummm. If I found a Vario-Sonnar for my Contax, I'd probably get rid of
my Konica AR, too....well, maybe. |

Well, I'm fixed on the Nikon, that won't change. |

I wouldn't argue about the quality of Zuiko glass, that's true. I gave up Olympus as a system after shutter problems with two bodies in a row. I'm sure I was just unlucky, although in the case of the OM30 I learned later that it was notorious for problems with the shutter magnet.
These ML lenses are good, but it's going to be hard to top the Planar in any marque. It's worth keeping the Contax for that alone.

I can't let Zeiss go. I know there are lenses available for Nikon, but the
Contax has a great VF and right snappy frame advance, a real plus, and
in a compact package. |

Contax MA to me, it is a historical camera which has the firs built-in

Koji-san and Orio, yes, I'm thinking the same, keep the Contax. I got it and
the CZ Planar for $100 off the 'bay, had considerable cleaning to do to the
body, replaced hinge pad, mirror foam and lightseals, and works like a
dream. It still has the original body covering where the leatherette separated
and left a gray/blue denim-like material which is actually quite comfortable in
hand. |

Laurence, good call. I'm going to miss Maitani's work of art, but some things
have to go. Whatever I don't pack on the plane will have to be shipped, and
it will be expensive. |
