Want to buy a 20mm for my 5dII. In the past I had Flektogon 20 f2, 8 which was fantastic on film. With the 5D instead was a modest edge sharpness. Now I want to buy a new 20mm. What? The Mir 20mm f 3.5 or Arsat 20 f 2.8 provide better results in digital? Thank you. |

Try again Flektogon 20mm f2.8 or F4 not all copy same they have copy variant issue. A bit more expensive and more rare Olympus OM 18mm f3.5 is my suggestion. I wasn't impressed by Mir 20. _________________ -------------------------------

The Fleks 20mm are a lot better than the MIR 20mm. You would end up disappointed if you buy a MIR after having used the Flek.
The reason for the lower edge sharpness on 5D is because of the digital sensor having problems capturing peripheral rays coming from ultra wide angle lenses. The lens itself has no problem, as you have seen on film.
The only lens that is sure to outperform the Flek 2.8/20 sharpness wise is the Distagon 2.8/21, which costs around 1200 Euros used in Contax version and some more new in Z version.
So as you can see, a lot more than the Flek.
The Fleks and the manual Nikkors are the best price/performance ratio in the 20mm focal lenght. _________________ Orio, Administrator

Oh yes, as Orio said any Nikkor 20mm is an excellent and low cost choice also. _________________ -------------------------------

21 f2 and f3.5 both are stunning lenses same or better than above lenses (matter of taste who say better or not) my Konica 21mm f4 not reach their level. Perhaps mine is not well adjusted to infinity. _________________ -------------------------------

When shooting on digital, you can correct the lateral chromatic aberrations of the Flektogon easily in a raw converter. This increases edge sharpness considerably. |

I suggest the Minolta Rokkor 2.8/21 a design with floating elements.
Sharp good contrast and edge performance even @f2.8
The only drawback are some chromatic abberations but can easyly be fixed in Capture one.
example @f2.8:
