The R1C1 Macro Flash System is pretty pricey. So maybe to save some bucks: can the Nikon SB-800 (or even the SB-900) Flash be used as the controller for an SB-R200 Flash System? The R1C1 System uses the SU-800 mounted on the Nikon Hot Shoe to control a pair (or more) of SB-R200 remote controlled Flash heads. The R1C1 Kit provides for mounting the SB-R200 heads on a special “Ring” that mounts on the objective of a compatible lens. Problem is that many of Nikon’s lenses cannot be used with this method of setup. All things considered, why not (if possible) use the SB-800 Flash to control the SB-R200 heads that can be mounted on some other form of remote stand or bracket system? Will the SB-800 or 900 Flash work for this control application? Thank you for your feedback. Best Regards, Robert.

The SB-R200 slaves (set to remote mode) can be controlled/triggered by

- SU-800 commander unit
- SB-800 or SB-900 in Master mode
- Nikon DSLRs which have a commander mode for their built-in flash (at least the D70, D70s and D200, I think also D300/D300s and others as well)

A bit of overkill but hey, at least the sales rep's at Nikon surely love his raygun

I count eight SB-R200's which equals 1600 EUR. I wouldn't spend that money on a ring flash. It's doubtful you even need more than two SB-R200's for a macro flash setup, which you can control using your Nikon DSLR's built-in flash unit.
