Feel the air

As you know, I am mainly a Contax user since some years. I am familiar now with those lenses, and yet, there are times, when they still can surprise me. I find the S-Planar 2.8/60 (which later was rechristianized as Makro-Planar) one of the lenses more full of surprises. It's rendering is sparkling and vivid as I have probably not seen from another lens.
In the case of this image, I was shooting young oaks, for my job.
When I reviewed the image, I found something very difficult to explain, as if I could feel the air, the distance, the crispness of the cold, emerging from the image. It's something difficult to focalize, I think it's a combination of the lighting (of course), the atmosphere, of the bokeh of this lens, of the sparkling microcontrast, of the very particular colour rendering of the Zeiss Contax lenses.
Whatever that is, any time I look at this image I get like a feeling of depth, breathe, and mountain air... that I can not really put in to words.

Sure we can put photographs and lenses into rankings by the MTFs, graphs, curves, measuring tools... but how can we measure the magic of a piece of equipment ?? And yet it exists...

by "heart beats per minute" while looking at the equipment, using/touching it, staring at the results.

wonderful light in this shot.

Yes I can feel the air, impressive image Orio.
The S-Planars aren't just good for makro work Smile

That's the point, Orio!
I more and more ignore those MTF things and just see if I like a lens or not.

Great shot!

@Orio, at first I thought "oh, he only has emotional attachment to photo" while waiting for image to appear, I have only dial-up internet, then after photo downloaded, my tune changed!

I can smell that dry grass and feel how dry is the air and low sun angle made me shiver!

Yes, there is something there, that does not happen often. I too get attached to photos, but usually I am able to be analytical. This lens has something very strong in its rendering - something I noticed already when shooting a nude session with it - but then it made my work a bit difficult because with artificial lighting it was often "too much".
Here, with this natural lighting and the haze in the distance which would have killed 90% of other lenses results... it just.... WHOOMP... hit me in the face. I really wish I took this shot with a Provia slide. I bet that projected large it would have been a thrill.

P.S. Note that I did not sharpen the photo in any way, nor did any other adjustment. All the sparkle and presence in it come from the lens not the software. If I sharpened I would have added nothing to the crispness while I would have probably ruined the bokeh.

This is exactly why I have fallen in love with Zeiss lenses, a beautiful image.

I couldn't agree more. Sometimes we pay too much attention to the technical performance of a lens, but there are so many other things to appreciate.
There are lenses which are not particulary sharp, but the look of the pictures produced by them is good enough to compensate for that.

One of teh first Macro Lenses I bought and never regret it. It clearly shows why in your pic Orio
(I also have the "S-Planar" denoted one). That front lens lies so deep inside, one hardly needs
a sunshade, another benefit.
