I am starting to look for a wide angle on my 5D. I currently have a 28mm Zeiss, which i like a lot but i want wider as wide as 17mm - 18mm. I am on a budget $400 or less. One thing i hate in a wide angle is CA.So what are your suggestions? Sample pics are always appreciated. Will be using mostly for Landscapes so likely will be stopped down most of the time

i am not as experienced as others here but from my experiences it will be not easy to find a well enough corrected ultra-wide in that price range.

but if you can deal with some CA the tokina (or vivitar) 3.5/17 could be an affordable solution. (90-130€)

tokina 3.5/17 @ around f8... don't remember exactly.

I had the 17mm Vivitar, I wasn´t so happy with it.

I would try a Nikkor 20mm F4, this is a truly great lens. Or a Mamiya Sekor/SX 21mm F4.

But they are both pretty difficult to find.

Well, Jim, in Italy we say that you can not have the wife drunk and the barrel full Laughing
Asking for a 17-18mm lens without optical flaws and for less than 400 USD, it's quite wishful thinking.
Let's see how the new Samyiang 14mm lens will do - perhaps it will do the miracle.
For now, the entry level for an optically good 17-18mm lens is around at least 800 USD

Hey Jim I have a Carl Zeiss Flek 2.8/20 if you are interested.
The 2.8/20 is the later multi-coated one. Not to many of these floating around the US in near mint condition.
Send me a PM if your interested and I will search a price.

BTW
The Tokina is OK if you stop it to f8.
For the few extra degrees of view I would suggest a 20mm from Zeiss, Zuiko, or Nikkor.
Or even stretch the budget out for the newish CV 4.5/20 (I still prefer the older Zeiss or Zuiko)

i dont know, i think if youre willing to spend $400 you can get a pretty good lens... the flek 20, the arsat/mir 20, the tamron 17, the zenitar 16, i think people have had good experiences with these. i am glad you started this thread, because i myself had decided on the mir/arsat for a 20mm, but was very curious about forum members opinions of the tamron 17 vs the zenitar 16 on the 5d? hopefully, in addressing your question, this question will be answered as well....

Hi Jim - I would support Andy's proposal ...

and also if there is a company which is able to eliminate CA in wide angle that is Zeiss -- from my experience -- I don't know Zuiko or others --

but Zeiss have some receipt how their CA 'looks nice' Smile !

honestly my comparison did not show the tammy to be much of am improvement over the Tokina.
Which is to say both are good by f8 but not great.
YMMV

hey andy, thanks; do you have any thoughts on the zenitar?

PostPosted: Sun Jan 31, 2010 12:27 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

Sure
It can be best in class great or a lemon POS . Not much in between. I got lucky with a great copy.
But the Zenitar 16 is not a rectilinear lens it's a fisheye.

Thanks for the input so far.My first choice was the C/Y 18mm f4 which i have seen on FM go for around $700.Maybe i will just need to wait and save until i can afford it.I am waiting to hear how the Samyang 14mm does.I have the 85mm f1.4 by Samyang and it is an awesome lens.

Possible 5D mirror contact with the 18mm

http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

I use the Ziess 20mm F2.8 and find its a great lens for the price.

How is the Zeiss 20mm F4 and Nikkor 20mm series?
Thanks Smile

If you do not mind a zoom lens, Tamron AF SP 17-35/2.8-4 is recommendable.
I got a brand new one by only $176 on eBay.

I also heard that the Tamron is way better than the Sigma with identical figures, but it is not cheap after all.

I would strongly recommend the 20mm F4 Nikkor, if this isn´t too close to your 28mm. I don´t know what´s more important to you, some % wider angle or some % better image quality Wink

Benedikt

My suggestion is to eliminate the CA in post processing - it is quite trivial with just about any raw-converter.

In my opinion it is kind of funny how many old lenses actually function better in a digital environment than they did in the film era, mostly due to CA-correction.
