Just won a Steinheil Culminar 85mm f/2.8 and shipping on its way. But the tracking number failed to track the item.
Someone told me the Culminar is having an identical formula of tessar 85mm f/2.8, is that true?

Thank you

No idea, but good lens that for sure.

Apparently Steinheil called several formulas "Culminars";

One type is a Tessar, another is a reversed Tessar, and there could easily be something else as well, who knows.

For what its worth, my 4.5/135 Steinheil Culminar is a Tessar.

Hi Raid; here the old dinky Steinheil Culminar 85mm/2.8 is used sometimes on Russian and Leica too. It is a tessar formula; 4 elements in 3 groups.

I got a book and stated Culminar should be a modified tessar format.

A hisotry of Photographic Lens (Rudolf Kingslake) p. 89 stated : " A few designers have turned the lens around so that the cemented doublet comes in front and the separated elements behind."

From A Lens Collector's Vade Mecum:

Quote:
"Culminar VL f2.8/85mm No597,292; ... Triplar for Contax fit"

and

Quote:
"Culminar f2.8 85mm This is fairly common in UK for M39x26 (Ste028).It was seen at Nr59729x and
noted at No960,78x. A note in Modern Photo 02/1968 p45 describes it as 'softish',... and 'a very second
grade... optic'. They note it would be useful for portraits and that the Steinheil Quin... series were
first grade."

The 85 Culminar is a nice lens but prone to flare. You should try to find a fitting hood (which is not easy).

I agree with Lucispictor , this lens is prone to huge flare, and there is no filter thread on it . DIY sunshade is a good way here, and a cylindrical one of 50mm (2") would be perfect.

Can you make a simplified version if one wants a tattoo out of it onto right arm. And then gaussians to the left ..
