What does everyone else do? I have so many lenses and I simply cannot manage them anymore. What does everyone who has even more lenses do to manage them?

It is not necessary to manage.
Just exist in a sea of lenses.

There is a Zen thing here I think !

It's just an addiction. Ways to deal with LBA:

* Cold-turkey withdrawal. Discard them all. I'll help you out.
* Overdose. Get so many that you develop resistance to them.
* Acceptance. Admit that you are doomed. Revel in it. Enjoy!

How to manage them? Lots of storage, and number each lens. Use your computer to randomly select a lens number every day. Use *only* that lens on that day. This will teach you to prize what you don't despise. Or, every day, randomly choose a lens to discard, then think deeply about whether you *really* want to keep it or not.

You are asking the correct question to the wrong group of people. Most of us here have 1 too many lenses. We know we have LBA. But to many of us, we still don't have enough lenses.

Buy the lens and use them; not to keep them. Type to discover the different signature or characteristic by different lens - something which I am still learning.

How many lenses do you have? I have 400+ lenses and I'm not overwhelmed, yet Smile I guess my level of tolerance is pretty high.

One of the solutions is to buy more camera bodies Wink

That is a somewhat typical stage in the development of GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). Almost everybody suffers from that sooner or later.
Sometimes again and again and again...

I had the first attack of "Oh my God! Too many lenses" some years ago, about two years after I had started to gather them. That was the first time I sold a lot.
After a while more and more new lenses found their way to me, so the next attack came and I sold again.

Selling the stuff you hardly use is a reasonable approach, I guess.
But I'm afraid it will never stop completely! Wink

I had become overwhelmed by my lenses too.

But then I put standards and found peace of mind.

I sold every lens I had that wasn't a Zuiko or made in USSR & GDR...

I decided that I only collect Zuiko, Soviet and East-German lenses.

So, I look for these lenses regardless of the use I do with them as long as they are Zuikos, USSR and GDR made.

I just want to have them.

I use them of course, but I also see them as a collection that I want to have. I am looking for good usable lenses, not mint copies.

I am both a user and a collector.

For example: I have all three 35-70mm Zuikos. I only use 35-70mm f3.6 now but I don't mind having the other two as part of my collection.

So, I no longer feel overwhelmed because I know what I'm looking for and I satisfy my need for usable lenses and collective items I know they're not of much use (I don't need all variations of the Helios-44 but it is nice to have them as a collection).
So far, I have almost 50 lenses. I use regularly around 12.
I look at all of them and I feel nice. That's enough for me.

All other lenses, I just ignore them. For example: I like Tokina lenses. But I am not gonna pay for them anymore. The Zuiko line-up can provide me with every lens I need (except maybe the Zuiko 90mm which is too expensive).
I use rangefinder lenses on my PEN E-P1. I only look for Soviet M39 lenses, they are enough for me.

So that's the remedy I've found. And it works!

At last, after all the preceding total codswallop, the voice of sanity.

Mind you you may have too many for one person so I suggest you send all the primes to me (and the odd Contax zoom) and the rest to DJMIKE?

That way you will make three people happy... Smile

I agree with LucisPictor.

When lenses you don't use so much start to pile up, then sell them, and perhaps buy more with the proceeds. I like to be constantly refining my collection this way. But beware, you might find yourself rebuying lenses you have previously sold. This is something most of us have done here. It's is not always a bad thing. One learns a lot about copy variation this way.

Lenses are a lot like wine. Certain vintages can be superior, but then again you might get corked.

I own two types of lenses. Those I use, and those I collect strictly because I'm a lens Twisted Evil fetishist!

I just want to figure out how to use them all. Now each one seems to have a unique characteristic and I cannot keep track of them all, including the very fine details. i will sell some but I have not even used all of them yet to know what they are capable of...so I am torn a bit. I think others have an exponentially greater number of lenses but mine are overwhelming, when you include all the other crap I have! Before MFL, I was going to get rid of all of them, now look what "you done"!???!!

Hey everybody, I was the first to offer to relieve his overcrowding. I have first dibs. Y'all just back off, now...

Yes, keep a spreadsheet. My LENSES spreadsheet records: Maker, model, type (prime, zoom, enlarger, etc), mount, focal length(s), maximum & minimum apertures, aperture type (preset, M/A, auto, etc), AF or MF, minimum focus distance, iris blades, front thread, serial number, actual price (including shipping), country of origin, and notes. The LENSES SOLD section of that sheet adds selling price, profit amount and margin.

Then there's the sheet for general camera data. And another for detailed data of my digital cameras. And a misc/math sheet with DOF and format and conversion tables, and tallies of step-rings and filters. Yes, I have too many of those too. I should probably add sections for flashes, 'pods, hoods, etc --I have enough to justify tracking them. If only I could GPS-tag everything so I'd know where to look for stuff...

You need your list and a storage system. and after each move of a lens from storage in bag you have to update your list Smile

I somtimes miss lenses.

And somtimes I forget to have lenses.
"Found" two or even three simple Steinheil lenses I dind´t realize I have them. "Found" two Jena Flectogon 35mm f/2.8 too.
But now I stated a list!
At the moment I have 110 lines in the list (added ~ 25 yesterday). But have to ad my microscopy lenses, my ~ 20 EF lenses for parts and some EF lenses that are really usable. Ant probably some others more I forgot to add up to now.
