Advice needed (M42 lenses and Nikon)

Good evening, since I own a Nikon camera I can't use M42 lenses properly. Until now I have Telemegor 400, CZJ Pancolar 1.8/50 and CZJ 3,5/135 (on the road). What should I do to work properly with these lenses ?
a) change the camera (Pentax?), I can't afford to buy another one
b) try to change the mount to Nikon
c) buy a KOOD adapter
d) change the mount of the body to M42 (I have a broken Praktica)
What do you think ?

Change for a Pentax is a good idea.

Go for an EOS, so you can adapt the most lenses.. now and in the future.
Or take a look at the Pan G1.. they should better in terms of adapting lenses of all kind.

Dont know, which Nikon you have, but a Canon EOS 300D, 350D or 400D in terms of beeing a crop cam as the Nikon, isnt too much money, you cant afford.

Buy a M42 film camera (they cost a few euros...) and enjoy your M42 lenses with film until you can afford to buy a DSLR that can mount them.

The easiest option is to buy a decent "glass" adapter (e.g. KOOD) and a mechanical adapter which does not give infinity focus and to compare pictures taken with the two types of adapter. If the quality of the pictures taken with the "glass" adapter is acceptable to you then maybe your problem is solved. If it's not acceptable then you might lose a small amount of money. A KOOD adapter might cost 30-35 GBP. If you decide to sell it you might have to take a loss since there are lots of cheaper adapters available on *bay.

There are some arguments against using a "glass" adapter. Some people even describe it use as improper. I don't know why, but if it worries you don't do it. Of course M42 lenses were designed to be used on film cameras so their use on any digital camera might be described as being improper. It depends on how far you want to go.

As for your other options...

(a) The relative merits of different cameras have been discussed widely on this forum and elswhere. But if you are going to sell you Nikon what will you miss ? For example, I noticed some of your pictures taken with a Nikon D60 and a Kiron zoom. If you change to a different camera you will not be able to use this lens with automatic aperture. Will this matter ?

(b) Changing mounts. Do you like this idea ? Are you good with your hands ? Some people aren't.

(d) Changing the camera mount. This has been described on this forum and elswhere. One modification involved cutting the aperture activation lever inside the camera. If you have a spare camera that you are willing to sacrifice maybe this is OK. But if it's your only camera it might be a bit drastic.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you for all your input.
For me its' sure to never buy a Canon again. I had two 35 mm before and each of them didn't last more than 2-3 years before having serious electronic issues. Another fact against Canon is that almost every photo shot with a Canon I receive at works has to much magenta. It's a real pain in the… to fix that. I'm very satisfied with Nikon, there's just this stupid register issue Embarassed

I thin that I'll go for the KOOD adapter now and maybe later try to get a Pentax. Using film is not the best option to me because the use will be rather expensive (film & processing)

Hi Andreas, that´s new for me. I´m not a Canon fan boy but I didn´t heard this so far.

Magenta is more a problem of Leica M8 Rolling Eyes

Hi Rolf, I think that the problem comes from the internal camera software when the guys take the photo in jpeg. I found it while comparing the photos from the same object, taken with Nikon, Pentax and Canon. And a few weeks ago an artist ordered some reproductions of his paintings on canvas. The photos where shot with a Canon by a "pro" and all of them had to much magenta too. It was impossible to fix the colours. Ok, to be honest, let me say that I believe that the photographer was an idiot. I've never heard before about anyone making art photos with a 400mm, one spot in the centre and outdoor. Rolling Eyes

I also knows that the photographers at "Képi blanc" have the free choice between Canon and Nikon. Those who chooses to use Canon do this because they like the more magenta rendering. They are not looking for the correct colour but a colour they like.

Another future option to consider might be Sony; shorter register than Pentax, in-body stabilisation (although full effectiveness requires electric adapter, unlike the better Pentax cameras), etc. However, Sony makes the sensor for Nikon DSLRs and also uses the many of the same in their own cameras, so there might be something familiar image-wise. =) Pentax is more friendly towards M42 lenses, but so far they don't have a full frame camera available and the systems seems to evolve rather slowly overall.

Full frame is not so important to me. When I bought my Nikon I was on a budget and I verified as well as possible all the manufacturers. Finaly i stayed with Nikon or Pentax. Nikon had, for me, the advantage of good quality/price ratio together with very good standard (kit) lenses and Pentax because they are quite cheap and a "sealed" body. I don't remember now why I rejected the Sony, but there was a reason.

But I read that Jpeg rendering differs from a camera to another (from 300D to 500D for example.

I like my 40D very much but I always shoot in Raw.

Maybe it also belongs to the lens. But recently I learned that some people even don't know that they can take pictures in an other way than jpeg. One of my customers asked me how I do with my photos to change the rendering; When I began to show her how to process a RAW file she said :"I'm sorry, but my Pentax only take photos in jpeg mode." She has an K20 Sad
