I went to the local flea market with friends yesterday. Right before we headed out, I spotted a Pentax S3 in the back corner of a glass case. The owner had to dig through a pile of junk to get it out for me. I was after the Auto-Tak 55 1.8, which looked to be in perfect working order, but the damn thing wouldn't come off (I'd just missed an auction for a Super Tak and thought that it might satiate me for the time being). The release refused to work, and the pin was hanging up inside the camera. I tried for maybe five minutes in vain. Not one to accept defeat, I refused to walk away. I explained my issue to the owner, so he let me have the whole setup for $10. Instead of taking out my frustration on the S3 with a dremel when I got home, I unscrewed the face, depressed the pin, and separated the two.

The inside is one big, hollow, black cave. WHAT? Well, whatever. I got what I was after. So I have a Tak, finally. Not a Super, but the forerunner with the auto switch.

AND the post brought me my new bumpy Jupiter 9 a few hours later. Keep your fingers crossed that both work well. Smile

So...what do I do with this thing that was once an S3?

Is it heavy enough for a doorstop?

Those Auto-Tak 55/1.8's are very nice, I really enjoy using mine. It has a bit of a different flavor from the super/smc's. Congratulations!

I like those 2 lenses very much, especially the super tak 1.8/55 which is very smooth and real joy to use. Smile

I took a few quick shots to see how they did. Both are wide open and followed by 100% crop.

Tak:

Jupiter:

That'll do, pig.

Looks okay to me.

I have the later S-M-C tak but it has to compete with too many other lenses in my collection of this focal length. I'm now inspired to start using it again.

Interesting comparison.
Notice the differences in OOF, colors, and bokeh.
The Takumar is at f:1.8, but 55mm
The Jupiter is at f:2, but 85mm.

The bokeh gives them away easily.
The Tak's bokeh is so "Tak", and the J9's bokeh is so "J9" Smile
