At the local fly-market I had found yesterday the lens for Kiev/Pentacon mount. It was MC VEGA-28B 2,8/120mm in perfect condition, in the native round box, however without both plastic covers. But it had in addition the yellow filter instead. I really had one already for my Kiev 6, but not in so good condition. So, I considered the possibility, because I was quite satisfied with my own.
The seller asked for it $50, which I believe is quite reasonable price for it. Anyway I was not going to buy the second one, however to exchange it was not so bad idea. I inspected my storages, and discovered Sesnon 300/5.5 for М42, which I really don’t need after recent purchase of Tair 300A lens. The Sesnon is much lighter, and shorter then Tair, however the quality is not so good at all, and it has the considerable chromatic aberrations on the digital. Plus it is much slower.

It looks like this:

The seller took the pause for one night to consider the proposition, and today he decided to go on with it. So, I have that lens instead of my tele.

I hope I will not regret that exchange in the future.

Surely any Russian lens is a better deal than a noname Japanese tele, Vega lenses are really good ones, I had 80mm f2.8 It had superb IQ. I cross my fingers to trade it successfully.

I don't know the Sesnon, but Vegas are excellent lenses, so I am sure you have made a great trade.

Really I have been happy with my preceding one (I exchanged it 10 years ago for the Nikon point-and-shoot, which costed to me in USA $10) , by which I achieved perfect medium format slides. In spite of even a lot of dust inside (which I had not been able to dig out). However with SSSR made lenses you never know what that particular would be. My first one was from the very first one (with the purple MC coating), and the recent was made at 1990. Which is better, of course then late 70-th, or early 80-th. Well, let us see what the test will show.

I compared three different specimens of that VOLNA with my black Biometar 80/2.8 MC, and Biometar always had been better (contrast and resolving power) even at 8.0 So, I would recommend rather later Biometar, then VOLNA. However I know that a lot of folk is quite happy with it.

Oh, well, sorry! I was certain you mean VOLNA 2.8/80! VEGA really is 90/2.8 if I remember justly. It was used before VOLNA came to existence, and generally is regarded inferior to VOLNA.

I have no experience with Volna 80, but I had a damn fine Vega 90 f2.8 with KIEV 88 mount.
Generally Russian lenses are very close to Carl Zeiss Jena or Nikon lenses in my opinion some of them even better.

There is an example how my old WEGA 120mm works (regarding limitations of compression):

I have a Vega 90mm 2.8 (Kiev 60) and it's a really fine lens. Excellent for portraits. Really good sharpness, colors and contrast.
