Hi! This is my first post on this forum. Like the subject says, i'm looking for a 50mm lens for my 5d, i've been looking some (zeiss 1.8 and 1.4, zuiko 1.4, takumar 1.8 (i think the 1.4 doesn't match very well with dslr?) etc...

So, if anyone have something to offer, welcome!

Thanks! Smile

Welcome to the forum!

Now to your question: Leica Summicron 2.0/50.

Makro-Planar 50/2 ZF or Yashica ML 50/1.9....

Oh and Nikkor-H 50/2, almost equivalent to Summicron-R 50.

hi
No problem with 5D and SMC Takumar 1.4/50

Carsten is right to indicate the Summicron, but not everyone can afford it. If you want to buy a sharp 50mm lens at a low price is to buy a Nikkor 1.8/50 AIS. It is sharp as the Summicron (I have both) but at 3-4 times less the price.
Another sharp 50mm lens at good price is the Contax Planar 1.7/50.
The Planar and the Nikkor can be found from 50 Euros (this is what I have paid for my second copy of the Planar 50) to 80-90 Euros.
The Summicron is rarely found for less than 150 Euros. Often also reaching the 200 Euros and sometimes more depending on which version.

Welcome to the group Very Happy

Contax CZO planar 1.4/50.
Love the character and color from this lens.
I never used my Summicron as much so sold it.
The Planar 1.7/50 is as sharp or more so.
The slightly faster version has a more lush look to my eye in the rendering and OOF areas.
Here is a shot and crop taken at f2 on the 5D. Nothing special but good lighting.

5D less sensitive for lens quality than crop cameras and almost any 50mm lens is very good. So you can take any without disappointment.

How so? Corner sharpness will come into play on a 35mm sensor surely.
Second vote for the Planar 50/1.7 and 5D. Great combo.

Very low pixel density - 12 Mp on full frame. Though, I would also think that corner performance, especially wider apertures, might not be too good on 5D with average lenses.

Corner sharpness may degrade more due to larger imaging area, but overall full frame needs less enlargement for a given output size, therefore being less sensitive to the performance of the lens because all the flaws are also enlarged less than they would be with a smaller sensor. Same thing goes for large format; 100-year-old lenses with all sorts of flaws can still make stunning images on large format because the enlargement (if any!) is much less. (And yes, those, too, can suffer from lack of corner sharpness.)

In this case the relatively low pixel density also makes 100% pixel-peeping less sensitive because the sensor just doesn't resolve detail as fine, but of course 100% pixel-peeping is not a sensible way to look at pictures… =)

Isn't this one of the lenses which hits the mirror on 5D unless shaved? If not, then I'd say the S-M-C or SMC Takumar 50mm f/1.4 would be an excellent choice. Or a Zeiss. Or the EBC Fujinon 50mm f/1.4.

Thanks Arku to answer well.

In my mind, there's no doubt about the choice : CZ Planar 50, either 1.4 or 1.7. There is now an EOS mount version, but it's more costly, being newer, though you wouldn't need an adapter.

Good second choices would be the Yashica f/1.7 ML (I prefer this to the f/1.9, though that too is a good lens), or the Yashica f/1.4 ML, which is rarer and can begin to approach the second-hand price of the CZ f/1.7 Planar.

But if you want to do it properly, get a Planar.
