That's a nice blur effect in the shot that shows Chris.

Sad to see these people , sometimes I think about to make series from homeless people and publish them... because I believe nothing will change I don't do it. Homeless stage completely unacceptable for me.

I was using Chris' (Seymore) Nikkor 18-70 AF-S, lens (in MF mode). Actually the "blur effect", I did in PP using (the free) Picasa 3, "soft focus" enhancement. In the original picture, the background was pretty much out of focus anyhow as I used a fairly wide-open apeture setting, but I gave it a slight "softness around the edges" to further seperate the background from Chris & his camera.

Here's another soft-focus effect photo I shot yesterday in Aberdeen of a very old (movie) theatre that is being refurbished:
