I just picked up a Helios 40-2, but I can't seem to get it very sharp. I'm wondering if I'm just too used to sharper lenses or if there is a problem. I know I can send my AF lenses off for calibration with my camera to make them tack sharp, but does anyone have an idea on a way to make this lens sharper? Am I out of my mind?

If you are using it wide open the Depth-of-Field will be quite thin and you might find focusing difficult. Have you tried stopping-down - to f/8 for example ? Focusing should be easier and you should be able to obtain a very sharp image.

Wide open, Helios-40-2 is only sharp in the centre, very fuzzy towards the edges, and becoming a bit sharper at extreme edges. Go figure, but that's how the design works. By f/2.8, it's quite sharp everywhere.

I dont think one would buy this lens for sharpness, but rather for its unique bokeh, which makes it the Portrait lens its famous for.

It is possible you have a bad copy, esp if its been disassembled and incorrectly reassembled. I hear this not uncommon with the 40-2.

Have you stopped aperture down to f/8 ?

It is one of my sharpest lenses!

I can buy one 40-2 at USD 145.

Is it a good price? Is a comfortable lens to use? (not so heavy?)

I like it, but. . .

Rino.

On Ebay easily reach 400-500 USD... , heavy, big lens, but still no problem with practical usage.

Can you show us some 100% crop taken with this lens from central part of image. It must be acceptable sharpness even at wide open.
