I had a fantastic day out in Eastleigh today for the 100th anniversary of rail works in the Eastleigh area, see http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/district/eastleigh/4374047.A_railway_century_for_Eastleigh_works/

There were plenty, and I mean PLENTY of decent cameras about! Nearly everyone had a Canon with a huge L series zoom lens attached (not sure why) Laughing

The works depot was opened right up, and trains from the last goodness knows how many years stood proud, from the steam trains of the 40s to the recently decommissioned slam door and Wessex Electric models.

Unfortunately the light wasn't brilliant and it was VERY busy, but I still managed to get a number of shots in. I was keen to try the SP 28-80 as I've never taken it out before, but heard some great reviews.

There are 25 shots below, all pretty basic shots and I don't expect you to look at them all, but there may be some train geeks here who are interested Laughing

A real old traction engine

Some more modern Virgin carriages hidden behind...

I used to get one of these to work, very comfortable. And they replaced them with horrible new ones Sad

An old slam door model, looking a bit tired!

Oops, this is a sneaky Pentacon 135 jobba!!

Still had the Pentacon on here...

And here! Sorry! Love the bokeh monster!

OK, last one with the Pentacon Very Happy

The No. 93 was my local stopper train as a lad

Not technically a photo of trains, but you can see one in the bumper Wink

Inside the depot...

Scary bokeh!

I found the SP 28-80 very sharp at f5.6 and above, producing some crisp images. I found it far, far too soft at f3.5 and f4 though.

Great day out Smile

Nice report! Thank you! Tamron lenses are pretty good even if their price doesn't show it. I did love this lens when I had it.

That's an excellent lens, my 35-80 is good but a bit narrow for digital crop.

Those yellows are to die for. Really delicious. Wink

Thanks guys, all photos are totally untouched, no sharpening or anything.

I took some nice portraits as well, but I shouldn't put them up without asking the indivduals first. I met Pete Waterman too (from Pop Stars fame etc.), really nice chap and he was happy to have his photo taken!

I think this lens has excellent resolution, here's a crop from the 13th photo:

Damn, I see more of those yellows. Superb series.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Reply about L's:

I am railfan and I wish I were there. I use a cheap film body [eos300] with 24-70 2.8L. The reason of using auto focus lens is the speed of the trains. But in the depots I'll use flek 35 from now on.

Anyway, last Saturday we all [crazy railfans] rent a train with an old Canadian diesel loco and we were shooting till death from Athens to Domokos and back.

I' ve taken with me A1+37a and zorki. I haven't the films developed yet.
Can you suspect how my friends look at me?

I felt like ET. Laughing

In the future I' ll try to use most the time mf lenses. Shooting in the depots with mf is no problem at all.

Bonus, some of my film shots: [sorry no mf, wait fo the mf shots Very Happy ]

THANK YOU FOR THE PHOTOS AGAIN!

Could I upload your photos to our railfan forum?

I feel that giving you an advice wouldn't be a problem. Next time when you shoot trains, open your frame, go more wide.

Hi Magnet, some great photos full of character, thanks! And I see there are a LOAD more excellent shots on your website.

Of course you may add my photos Smile As for going wide, unfortunately it was very, very busy, so going any wider would have introduced lots of people into the shots Sad But I will certainly have a go at going wider the next time I'm out and about shooting trains, although my widest MF is only 24mm.

Well done for taking a Zorki to your most recent trip though, would be interested to see the results!

The show is actually on until Monday...might be worth a visit? There are special night shoot visits as well for us camera geeks, with the trains running up and down (20:45 - 23:30) but it costs £35.00 for entry! Normal daytime entry is £14.00.

24mm is enough.

Don't ban people from your frames.

Actually the frame preferences of railifans [from the beginner to the experienced one] are:

1. Only and strictly the train

2. Train + landscape

3. Train + human presence.

4. Special macro - train photography.

Off cource mature rail photographers do all of the above.

If you deside to be one of us, at your service sir...!!!!!! Cool Very Happy

Your photos is on with the announcement of the 100th anniversary rail works in the Eastleigh area.

I cropped most of them out, but these beards are getting longer and curlier...it was quite a challenge! Laughing

Love trains. love the series. I grew up on Clapham Junction in the time of steam, so I have very fond memories of those belching monsters
