I've got 50mm Canon II 1.8. I'm asking if it would be a great idea to buy for example a Takumar 50mm 1.4. Is it better? Any other cheap fast lens with great quality? Thanks for any suggestions.

Definately. They will each differ in the way they render. If you're looking for something better, its a low price alternative to try. If you're just looking for something different you can't lose.

Fwiw, I keep a Sup Tak as a sort of back-up for my intentions. I tend to prefer the way the Topcor 58/1.4 renders oof, but the Takumar is quite different. I find the strength of the Takumar 50 is in being able to have very defined contrast around its point of focus at 1.4. Its easier to shoot wide open than other fast 50's I've used (including the Topcor) whose perfect point of focus is obscured by a rapid diffusion and harder to nail. If I'm not intentionally trying for melting bokeh stuff, then the Tak is prefferable to me.

As far as 'best' 50/1.4, probably a hard question to answer definitively. A lot of what people use to define this is highly subjective. I hear great things about the Leicas and look forward to trying one myself someday. Anyways, there is another suggestion for you in there as well (Topcor) Smile

Kelly.

no problem with crop sensor cams but the full-frame Canon 5D mirror hits the back of Tak 50's when focussed at infinity.

the mirror clears the back of Tak 55's fine.

edit:

Because i don't know 5D2, and only assumed exact similarity to 5D, above is changed from 5D(2) to only 5D.

the really great news i'm hearing makes me happy i was wrong to assume it! (please see Orio post below)

Take into account that properly focusing mf lenses on digital cameras is quite tricky unless you have help (5d screens, af-confirm, 3rd party screens, etc.). I only use mf lenses with film cameras now.

About the lenses, there are many many great 50mm lenses out there. You have a lot of good choices.

In many situations it's no problem to refocus and take the picture 2-3 times. It cost no money on digital camera...

Well, I wonder what you mean by better? What is it you are after? Tak 50 1.4 is certainly a very nice lens for the bucks so get it if you can, but I don't know if it's a replacement. For me, these both lenses have mostly just one thing in common and it's the focal length...

Plastic Canon is very sharp.
However there's more to a photo than sharpness and that is where some lenses as the SMC Takumar come into play.

I agree...there is a place for all lenses, it is not that difficult to build a sharp 50mm ,there are hundreds available and the canon is very sharp

It is much easier to be creative working with the tak than some superlight piece of whirring plastic , that never wants to focus on the right spot, on the front of the cam

The tak you buy for build quality, personality, speed and economy...and i do think my 55mm/2 SMC tak is sharper than the canon
Maybe i just had a bad plastic copy Very Happy

The SMC lens are very good from Asahi. But I also have a 55mm f/1.8 Auto Takumar that is good as well. My 50mm M lens a 50mm f/1.7 is great as well as the 2 50mm f/2's I used to have. My 50mm f/1.4 Super Tak is at a even level or better to all of the above.

I have the Canon 1.8/50 mkii and I also have the Tak 1.8/55. For sharpness at f4 and smaller there is no difference between the 2 lenses. However, wide open an the Tak is miles ahead.

Others have said there's more to an image than sharpness and the tak beats the Canon on bokeh and colours too. Contrast is a close call, but probably the multi-coated Tak would beat it again. Also, it's less than half the price of the Canon.

Having said that, the Canon has got me out a tight spot on a couple of occasions. Like shooting ice hockey. I would not have been able to MF that.

That is not the case with my 5DII.
Mirror cleared completely also at infinite.

That makes me to ask M42 or K-mount?

Do you think regarding new 5D2 lens compatability list, collecting serial numbers may also be important? not full serial numbers, maybe everything but last two or three digits?
